Liberty City Stories, on the PS2.

Truly an amazing experience for the time, the atmosphere was great and the story was engaging.

One of the most overlooked GTAs IMO.

Well, since I have only played IV... I guess I will go with that one. It was a pretty darn good game, but it was also very flawed. Still liked it though.

IV is the one I spent the most time with, so it wins by default. It is such an extraordinary game and with it's DLC, is the most complete gaming experiences I've ever played.

San Andreas for me. Giant map, interesting missions (with a few exceptions), large amount of customization, smooth gameplay. It was pretty much Rockstar giving us everything we wanted. Runner-Up would probably be Vice City, as I see it as a down-graded version of SA.

I really liked Ballad of Gay Tony. Yea it's a GTA IV dlc, but it changed the way game was for me. The ammo counter was purple, when the mission was over, a rainbow went across the screen with some music, and new weapons.

EDIT: oh and quite believable relationships/bromance between main characters

For me, its between Vice City and San Andreas. The former because of its atmosphere, superior soundtrack and the fact that it was my first sandbox game so its impact was deeper, San Andreas for sheer scale and the amount of fun you could have.
Quoted for stealing my opinion. Seriously, to the letter. I have nothing more to say.

Except maybe that I am SO looking forward to Saints Row III.

Overall San Andreas. But by far the funnest thing to do was go on tank rampages in GTA-2. And get the Elvis has left the building, uhh achievement I guess it would be.

Saints Row 2.

*smack* Ow!

Okay, okay, for seriouslies, I'll say San Andreas for gameplay (because you know what, I enjoy RPG elements) and Vice City for tone and story (and for having more than five songs on the radio that weren't some iteration of gangster rap).

SA was by far the worst, the generic steriotypes, the hip hop culture and the attempted RPG elements all gave me the shits. I really enjoyed vice city, as flawed as it was and GTA IV did everything right but I got bored of it quickly. I guess the ones I enjoyed the most were the original and GTA 2:London, so I'll vote oldschool top down GTA as 'best'.

Ray Liotta makes Vice City my favorite. I really like the vehicle handling in GTAIV though, the first time they ever felt like cars. I can spend an hour just hooning around the city perfecting my drifting. I don't do the sandbox things though, all that crap just feels empty in these games, I just power through the main story.

GTA IV it's the best in my opinion, if't only had the checkpoint system from Ballad of Gay Tony it would be perfect. And The Ballad of Gay Tony was a great dlc much more like random shit you see in San Andreas, it just lacked the story to appel to me.

so that is GTA IV.

Gotta go with Vice City on this one.

It's the first GTA I played... and the only one I actually finished. San Andreas was good, but I just got bored with it after awhile. And I got chased away from GTA4 by a fat man (your cousin, if I wasn't being clear enough).

San Andreas simply for the fact that I can enable vehicle of death and spawn a hydra (which is VTOL by the way) any time I want and go on a stunt flight.

4 by a wide margin. Graphics, animation, combat, all superb. But the real clincher, Cop AI, going on a rampage is more of a raison det're for GTA than it's story has ever been. But fighting the cops in GTA4 is more fun than in any of the other games. They wait for support, they move to outflank you they're just about impossible to escape from at 6 stars, they are actually a challenge. My best death in a cop fight was of my own doing, had gotten corned in an ally, was basically crouched in a corner taking on all comers. A police helicopter opens up on me so i pull my RPG and knock him down. I pull my rifle back out but my camera is fixed on the copter as i realize that it's spiraling right at me. It smashes into me and blows up, had to pass the controller on, but it was wild.
