I would have to say silver because a) 251 was a realistic number of Pokemon to collect b) You got to go back to Jhoto which was awesome back when you were 10 (well, 14 in my case but shhhh) and it added enough new features for it to be interesting (day/night, breeding) but not too many for them too seem pointless (Beauty contests WTF?!?!?!). I've picked Silver over Gold because thats the one I had and Lugia could kick Ho-ohs arse any day of the week.

The metal generation AKA Gold and Silver where the games that defined the games to come. Like Link to the past, all other pokémon games follow suit with only minor adjustments to the formula. but it is the incredible amount of time and replay value you get out of it.

I'm a little ashamed to say Sapphire/Ruby. Just because it had more pleasent, clearer graphics. But if Gold/Silver had those kinds of graphics, they'd be in my top spot undisputed.

Gold for me. Its just the game I did the most in overall in the series, not counting my perfect completion on Blue. I'm sure I'd appreciate the newer ones more if I didn't keep looking for older Pokemon in them though...

I loved red and I miss it dearly. It is missing form my GBA games/rom collection. And I dont yet have an emulator on this PC. Maybe I shall track it down and play it in the near future.
A close second would be silver. And then Emerald.

I heard Platinum was good, but I have yet to play it. ...And its in my DS right now. Its my brothers and I havnt yet felt a need to play the game. :/
