Baldur's Gate 2 is hands down the best RPG of all time. Nothing else can even come close, even today let alone back in 2000 when it was released.
The BG series was great, I'll give you that, but I can't agree with you on 'best RPG of all time.' For me, that would be Planescape: Torment. (and I do loves me some FFVII too)

Loved XenoGears. :) I'm guessing that this poll is just limited to the games listed. I loved many RPGs over both Playstation and PC platforms.

I loved the music in Chrono Trigger. The gameplay felt just about the same as a final fantasy game if i remember correctly though. That isn't necessarily a bad thing.

I felt Xenogears was silly, pretentious, badly translated, tried to be way too shocking with the OMG REELIGEEUN crap and failed miserably, and the cast was dull.

On the other hand Chrono Trigger makes me want to marry it and have children, then maybe get a divorce and have to pay child support, but happily so.

Of course, as long we forget about that...thing that was the, err, sequel to CT...

Super Mario RPG

/thread.

Seriously, though, how can you have Chrono Trigger, and Xenogears up there without SMRPG? It's one of the greatest RPGs of any time. I can still go back and play it right now without it feeling like it's incongruous to the current generation.

Chrono Trigger was the best RPG of the early consoles, hands down. Just so creative. My husband introduced me to it and got me hooked on RPGs that way (now we play an MMO together. but don't hate: we play MMOs _so_ we can play together)

After playing the DS version of Chrono trigger.. I have to say, it's kinda mediocre. Not a bad game, and certain better then most of the crap out there, but still far from the greatest rpg of all time. Perhaps revolutionary for it's time, but certainly could be improved upon.
...of course I could say that about every rpg I played since I started playing rpgs (Earthbound being the first that I really got into).

Rocks are actually quite comfy if you pick the right kind, set up a chimney system, and install proper lighting.

I played both games.

Chrono Trigger was kinda cool, but Xenogears was very fun and very memorable. I oughta get it again.

Yeah, but they get all hot and damp in the summer without air-conditioning.

But anyway, Chrono Trigger.

Meh to all the above.

A Link to the Past for my pick.

It was not only the first open world game but the most immersive game and had the best storytelling around at the time.

Damn me Planescape vs Balders.... Now that is a clash of the actual Titans as I would agree that these 2 games really are the kings of the RPG genre.

For my 2 cents tho I would go with BG2 slightly over Planescape just because of the more friendly interface. I never got on with the interface in Planescape much but then again that might be the mark of how epic a game it was that despite that I really enjoyed the game.

Of the two I believe it's general knowledge that Chrono Trigger was the great one.

Still, poor console gamers. Fallout2, BG2, Planescape, VTM:Bloodlines, Ultima7.
