I think Elder Scrolls is the best because of Morrowind and Oblivion...they are the best (Enviroment,combat,awsomness).....but Fable is cool but get boring the first one is the best one the second is boring to quickly........Fallout its cool an Oblivion with guns also gets boring after you complete all the DLCs, main quests, quests then I just killed everything on sight. (Gotta amit the slow VATs thing is awsome but also get boring if you play it for a month.......
sorry couldnt remember any others....

Crap should of put JRPGs too

Golden Sun. Awesome game, also Pokemon counts right? If so I'm choosing that. I don't think I've ever put as much time as I have to other games as I have with those.

Baldur's Gate series, hands down.
Fantastic story, unforgettable NPC's, epic length, great dialogue, interesting and fun side quests. I've never played an RPG better since (I still play BG), and it made me a believer in the power and sheer awesomeness of Bioware.

Oblivion, hands down.

So much depth, so much to do, the environment was beautiful plus it had Patrick Stewart in it.

Granted there was about 5 voice actors for over 200 in game characters and the combat wasn't the best but, overall, its probably the best game i've ever owned.

Mass Effect is the best I've ever played so far although I am yet to play KOTOR (I'm trying to find a copy of that as we speak).

ME had good combat, a reasonable morality system, humourous dialogue, memorable characters, an interesting plot and best of all...OMG! BOOBIES! (just kidding, I was fairly ambivilent about the PG sex scene).

A shame the only JRPG you mentioned is Final Fantasy... :/ A non-Square game would be nice, for once.
Shadow Hearts 2, imho, although I enjoyed Fallout 2 and Quest for Glory a lot, too.

Torment.

If you could make a game with the level of detail of Torment, but the interactive play of Mass Effect, it would be jizztastic.

The thought of that just made me come.

Elder Scrolls all the way. The sheer size of the universe Bethesda has created is mind-boggling, and allows for epic immersion.

Any discussion of "best RPG" must by definition exclude JRPGs. Bethesda and BioWare between them ensure that.

Since you're including JRPGs, Tales series. Symphonia would be the obvious choice, but I've read good things about Vesperia, and Abyss is pretty good so far.

I really enjoyed Oblivion; in particular, Shivering Isles. I have a thing for insane characters which draws my attention to them. Now imagine my glee when i was plonked onto an island full of raving lunatics. That must've been the only scenario where I voluntarily talked to every single NPC in the towns.
