Old subject, better description. Other than simply asking 30 million people who as a whole may or may not have the same interest as anyone else, this thread will go about it a bit differently.

What I want to do is try to do this like a competition, similar to the various 'Best Games' threads seen sporadically in these forums. The votes should be anywhere from 1 to 3 games ideally, but if you go nuts listing games because you can't decide, no big deal.

Secondly, I want to break the soundtracks down a little. No, not individual songs, although feel free to mention any particulars you enjoy, all I'm talking is separating original soundtracks from licensed soundtracks. Licensed soundtracks are what you think they are, using a song by an artist in a game, what many sports games do for the majority of their soundtracks. Originals are a bit more challenging, but I think this sums it up. Any song that was expressly written and/or performed for a specific game or franchise is considered original, and if these make the majority of a games soundtrack, then it will be considered an original soundrtack.

Finally, a simple vote to show what the masses prefer.

If this catches on, I'll put spoiler boxes on this post and keep tabs on both sets.

Gentlemen...

While some licensed music fits a title, original music will always be 'truer' to the game, but it really depends on the theme of the game.

Original:
Journey
Okami
Shadow of the Colossus

Licensed:
Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines
Grand Theft Auto (any of them, really)
Motorstorm Apocalypse
Fallout 3/NV

You may not know but some of the tracks in New Vegas are from the original games. You may want to listen to the soundtrack of Fallout 1 as there is a decent chance you may like it.
I tried playing the original Fallout, but I just couldn't get into it.

I really tried, too, but I just wasn't having any fun.

It can be difficult and a bit impenetrable, I agree.

Was it the difficulty or just the game itself that put you off?

For me I found playing melee then switching to guns in the very late game made it much easier.
I can't really put a finger on what it is that put me off, it might of been the combat, or because I just didn't play it long enough to actually see anything interesting.

I dunno, first time I played it, I just felt really underwhelmed and never felt the desire to play it again.

The halo soundtrack is without a doubt the best music ever in games. IMO.

Even if you are not a fan of the games. You know that music is awesome.

Side picks:

Mass Effect 2
Pirates of the Carribean
Pokemon

I'm not even that big a fan of Halo and it's hard to deny that this doesn't kick ass.

Gah, it's so fucking awesome.

Not to sound like an ass but Star Wars is far form original.

The imperial march
Mars bringer of war.

But on topic I do like the Halo Music and I don't like the games so there is that.

I can honestly say that I think the Scott Pilgrim vs The World game has the best soundtrack I've ever heard. Brutal Legend has a close second, but they're all licensed.

I prefer all original songs in a game. Also, I know I have been ninja'd, but Bastion's soundtrack gotta be one of the best in a while.

Purely for this song....

It's just so damn catchy.
I personally love this one :D

One of the reason I love Fallout is the music.
Ah, I love the Fallout music! Besides the classic awesome that is Maybe and I Don't Want To Set The World On Fire, I really like this one.

You can't talk about originality in video game soundtracks without mentioning Crash Twinsanity.

I should point out that it's an a capella soundtrack...that means it was done entirely with human voices.

Bastion. Dear lord, Bastion. I listened to, "Build That Wall" nonstop for hours.

I also remember having a lot of fun listening to Jet Set Radios soundtrack, but I never really played it directly.

The Persona 4 soundtrack is pretty damn awesome. It should go without saying that music made specifically for a certain game is going to be better than some random song that just so happens to tie in with the game's subject matter.

And I don't care what people say, Reach Out to the Truth is still the best song from any game series ever.

The Ace Attorney soundtracks are freaking sweet as well. Even the one aggravating tune that I can't quite recall at least slightly grows on me every time I play through the game.

Also Bastion for obvious reasons of awesomeness. You know the soundtrack is sublime if you've ever played the thing.

I will say that the really old music in the newer Fallout games is good. Moreso in Fallout 3 since I will forever despise that "johnny guitar" song that seems to be on a near permanent repeat on the damn station in New Vegas.

I assume that's licenced music anyway.
