Poll: Best soundtracks in gaming.....again.

One of the best video game soundtracks this generation. The game is pretty goddamn good too.

Yeah, Scott Pilgrim is good, too, but something about this ost gets me in the best of ways.

And this is one of my favorite songs in all of gaming, and I listen to a looooot of video game music.

Yeah, it really depends on the game. I prefer original in general, but games set in real-world settings or based on existing IPs can really benefit from licensed music. I mean, some missions in Saint's Row 3 were really improved by certain licensed songs, and yet for other games I absolutely cannot imagine them having their original soundtrack (Bastion, Okami, Deus Ex, etc.) and I would not ever want to replace those with other songs.

Bastion, without a shadow of a doubt the single best soundtrack available in any game ever.

Licensed wise, Gran Turismo 1 had some pretty sweet tunes (lots of Feeder's early stuff) and as has been mentioned above Saints Row 3 really benefits from some awesome licensed music. Not a huge fan of rap but I can't imagine jumping out of a chopper to take over a penthouse while listening to anything other than Kanye now.

I voted "Whatever fits", because while both original and licensed soundtracks are good what works for one game doesn't work well for another. I mean, what do you remember more from the more recent Fallout games, playing along to their orchestral soundtracks or running for dear life from Death Claws and raiders as GNR played songs like Civilisation? Subsequently, the Halo titles make good use of an original soundtrack, but Lord knows that a licensed one would just be a laughable hodge-podge of techno, rock and dub-step.

But if you're wondering what game I think has the best soundtrack, my answer is Stubbs The Zombie. The music in that game, which nwas covers of old pop songs from the '50s done by modern indie bands was not only a really good match in-of-itself, but perfectly complimented the game's clash of idyllic 50's living and horrifying zombie mayhem. TF2 isn't that bad.

Well some licensed music can fit the game especially when your world is seemingly tethered to reality (Fallout), but mostly custom composed tracks beat everything hands down.
