Definitely Age of Empires. Sure, it's basic, but to me it's had one of the greatest effects on the games I play today. It was my first game, so it's always been a favorite. Makes me feel sorta bad when I get bored by the old games, though.

Total Annihilation has to be my all time favourite RTS.

Sure the graphics had low polygon counts but the units were still some of the most imaginative I have seen in the RTS.

It was also simple, two resource types, no cover mechanics and two races. Good mindless fun.

Civilization is just amazing. Its tops, its the Bees Knees, the Cats Pajamas. Me and my cousin used to just binge on it, and make huge games, where the peaceful civilizations are ground into the dust, and the warmongers fought till the end of time.

Why is "Any "Sims" game" an option in a poll about strategy games?
Simcity-games might count as strategy games, even though there's hardly any explosions in them.
Then it's not a Sims game. It's a SimSomething game and it's a VERY big difference. Also, then all of the Tycoon games should be included as well...

Although Compang of Heroes is not a series, its still the best RTS out there. Also look into Sins of a Solar Empire. That IS the biggest RTS out there with an everage small match against one easy enemy taking around 2-3 hours. A full 8 player massive sized map would take days. Thats not exgagerated.

Where is World in Conflict? And what about sins of a solar empire! And by god where is supreme commander!?!? <--- Obvious strategy nerd

No vote from me!

Edit: I guess I'll vote starcraft

Not to inflame any hearts, but I basically see warcraft and Starcarft as the same, one have space marines and the other has orcs. I understand that there are some difference, but the both use the same formula created by Blizzard so I grouped them as one.

Try playing multiplayer. People use different tactics all the time. If all you ever do is hammer and anvil, you'll get owned.

Yeah, you have to be creative. Like, what about hitting a hammer with an anvil? Oh man, they'd never see that one coming!

Assuming you don't know what I meant, Hammer and Anvil is the strategy of creating a straight front of your men fighting his (the 'anvil') then getting your cavalry to charge on the rear of his front (the 'hammer').

It's gotta be a tie between Total War and the Blizzard pair. I mean, no game has ever done strategy (arguably the point of a strategy game) better than the total war series but few games have managed to pass Blizzard in depth and style and plain fun.

I'm a big fan of the Command and Conquer and the Homeworld franchises. Age of Empires was my first RTS love though, and I still play the series a lot.

If I want some fun, I prefer all the classic C&C games but Generals over every other RTS.

If I were looking for some serious competition, I like(d) the games made by Relic : Dawn of War and Company of Heroes. But that became too stressfull, exhausting and time consuming.

Also liked Age of Mythology (MP) and the custom maps in Warcraft 3.

I voted for C&C.

PS : Games like Cossacks or Sudden Strike should be in the list aswell.

Of the available choices I'll take Total War, but Europa Universalis brings the entire sweep of the last millennium of human history to life in a series of grand strategy games (and thanks to savegame converters, you can play the same country from 1066 all the way to 1964 via Crusader Kings -> EU2 -> Victoria -> Hearts of Iron 2.) If they made a Dark Ages game and extended EU:Rome into the Imperial era they could conceivably stretch history back almost 23 centuries (although most players would have WC'd long before the modern age.)
