Title basically asked it all, what do you think was the best Trek uniform (ignoring the reboot movies because there aren't enough options to add them)?

Though the original, movie 2-6 and season 3-6 Next Gen are by far the most iconic ones, I have to say the Enterprise uniforms win it out for me despite the series itself being the worst of the five. The reason for this is pure pragmatism, they're the best for working on a ship with. I mean just look at this thing.

Just look at all those pockets, having worked on a ship I can tell you that's a MUST have for working, yet none of the other uniforms have them in the entire history of Trek. Plus the zipper is on the FRONT of it instead of the hard to reach back like TNG's.

Plus unlike most of the other uniforms it doesn't seem to have the restrictive range of motion the others have. Plus ascetically it isn't half bad either.

So do you think is the best Trek uniform, and why?

Mine is rather specific, but it's a variation of the season 3-6 TNG uniforms.

It's the command variant that Picard wears which has a separate jacket of some kind. From a distance it looks the same as all the other uniforms of that era, but up close it looks more interesting.

I'm a sucker for the ones worn in Star Trek: Nemesis & the like. The design and fabric is what does it for me.

I like the movie uniforms (2270s-2350s) because they are the most military-ish. Late DS9 are also good, Enterpise make them look like space janitors and the rest are basically pajamas with early TNG being the worst offenders.

Didn't really watch Enterprise, but yeah, actual uniforms you could actually work and do things in seems like a plus.

Though, the movie 2-6 ones seemed like clothes as well.

OTOH, you don't need pockets in TNG, because you never carry anything except for com badge, and maybe hand phaser and/or tricorder, whatever your job is.

I always really liked the grey uniforms they introduced in mid-DS9 and First Contact, and went through Nemesis. As opposed to most previous Trek uniforms, they were actually "uniform," as in everyone wore basically the same thing. I never had a problem with the primary color pajama styles, it was charming in a way. But the grey ones obviously look much more professional and reasonable.

I will agree that the blue jumpsuits of Enterprise do look pretty good and clearly serve the purpose of a utilitarian garment that none of the other uniforms do; but I just refuse to give that show any credit over the other Treks (not including Abrams-verse, which is a blasphemy even Enterprise could never hope to match).

Yeah, I didn't much like it either, definitely the weakest of the series (which is probably why it killed the franchise). Ironically enough, the Abrams-verse has Enterprise as the only part of the prime timeline that is also part of its own timeline. Which makes me wonder how First Contact went down given how the people who interfered with it never existed as we know them in that timeline.

I always liked the next generation uniforms both in their styling and the way they reflected the universe they were in. The uniforms were colorful (and color coded), and didn't have that same dull utilitarian aspect that DS9 uniforms had. You don't need pockets because you have replicators and your means of communication is pinned to your uniform. I loved that weapons weren't a standard part of the uniform (they were equipped when needed usually alongside tricorders): meaning that peace was always the first option as opposed to violence. I did like Picard's jacket variant quite a bit and adored the dress versions of the uniforms. Plus, the fact that they were so form-fitting implied a certain amount of self-respect and fitness (which I liked to take as more of a sex-positive view of future humanity where people could be attractive even in their everyday stuff), plus it suggested an openness and vulnerability that would be inherent to space exploration (compared to some sort of space armor which is what the later DS9 uniforms were).

Basically, there's an optimism in the next gen uniforms that I always liked.

Ah, geez, you're right. Abrams' Next Generation crew shouldn't even be the same, meaning they can't stop the Borg in the past and everyone should already be assimilated... Damn time travel timeline rewriting grandfather paradox plot hole bullcrap.

Just one more way that NuTrek hurts me. That timeline is all made of bad.

You're making the assumption that the borg went back in time in the Abrams-verse, which they might not have to depending on how (not) successful the alternate universe tng crew turns out to be. The bigger contradiction comes from the idea that those events from the future of the prime universe (and presumably the alternate one) would have an affect on the shared past of both universes. It leaves all sorts of other issues related to the different time-travel plots all of the shows have had over the years; especially with the idea that the prime universe and the Abrams-verse happen in parallel (and that anything that happened prior to that romulan mining ship going back in time would be common to both universes). This is the sort of thing that happens in comics and usually leads to one of those grand reset crises.

More OT: I did like the white dress uniforms on the Enterprise E from Insurrection, too. Those were pretty sharp.

I'd have actually preferred a straight reboot/parallel universe as opposed to the time travel malarkey they went with. Plus we wouldn't have had old spock to come in and explain plot that the movies couldn't effectively show us.

I liked the uniforms they introduced midway through DS9 and the TNG movies. They looked stylish but had a sense of professionalism to them. Plus you could probably walk around a city in them and nobody would really give a shit compared to the other uniforms.

I've gotta agree with the Enterprise uniforms. All other incarnations of Star Trek uniforms (thinking specifically of TNG and Voyager) look very clearly like something made to look good on a TV set - slick, tailored but in no way practical - whereas the Enterprise uniforms look like they were made for people to actually work in.

There is something dated about the TNG uniforms when compared to the later series, but I think they did the best job of displaying roles while being a uniform for Starfleet. The DS9 uniforms just don't have enough color on them.

For me it's:

Movies 2 - 6 > TOS -> TMP -> Bermanprise -> Pyjamas (TNG through Voyager)

I absolutely love the red uniforms, even with the silly flap. They look like actual military uniforms, with style. TOS was iconic in its own right (except for the silly mini skirts perhaps).
TMP is underrated. Visually it was amazing, including the utalitarian uniforms. A great modernisation of the TOS uniforms.

Enterprise was a failure for me in all aspects, but yes, the uniforms do look future NASA like and thus realistic.

And then there's the pyjamas. I cannot under any circumstances take those seriously.

I've always liked the 'possible, maybe-canon future' ones that we first saw in "All Good Things" - I mean these ones right here [http://en.memory-alpha.org/wiki/Starfleet_uniform_(alternate)#Starfleet_uniform_.282390s-2420s.29]. Always felt like a nice balance between TOS and TNG's.

Seconded. It's a shame it seldom appears due to its "alternate(?) timeline" status. It's the uniform I use for my player character and her crew in Star Trek Online.

You've summarized my feelings on the topic quite well.

Honestly, I've little more to add. Well done.

I am female, and am not really fond of the pants uniforms for the women. My favorite uniforms were the non pants uniforms like this:

and these " alternate reality" uniforms were great too!
