I do enjoy the twitchy fast paced games such as halo, left 4 Dead, resistance and Team-Fortress (obviously dependent on class)but It really depends on the mood I'm in, and I am a man of many moods.

Hmm...

Good thread idea, terrible first post...

I go for... Run 'n' gun FPS, in games that supply sufficient cover, so you can make use of cover however you see fit, instead of always doing the exact same thing behind cover like in games with special cover mechanics.

I'm not a fan of cover systems, but games that require you to take cover without locking you to them are my fav. Games like red orchestra, ofp, arma, aa etc

whatever one counts at CS:S and L4D really, but i personally don't care what it is as long as the game is good enough for me to want to keep playing it

For me it isn't so much the cover mechanics that matter in a shooter so much as the a.i. mechanics, which seem to be pretty piss poor in all categories. Personally I haven't played enough of each mechanic to know which I like the best of those games, but when I played F.E.A.R. the cover system was alright, but that wasn't what stood out to me, the A.I. were actually clever, which made the actual shooting and popping out techniques a lot more fun.

I find the run and gun the best, as long as there's cover.
I don't like the run around like a man on crack (Halo), though.
I find the cover mechanics very slow...I don't like it.

I'm gonna say that counts as run and gun.

I wasn't much for console shooters then I started playing Gears
and I have to say that I LOVE the cover system Gears uses most of all

Bioshock would be a run and gun cover system in this context. I would personally like to see a first person cover system with a good duck mechanic and a sticky-walls mechanic, but that will probably never happen. Halo has a decent cover system, but it's rarely necessary because of the rebounding shields unless the difficulty is set to Legendary.

fps with good duck mechanic
although i dont like the whole "you magically heal while not taking bullets" crap i like the idea of being rewarded for trying to avoid bullets not just running in guns blazing like halo + other run n guns
i personally like cover based games but i find that they just dont flow smoothly and can end in age long standoffs and boring multiplayer

although my favourite thing in a shooter is it not being based on who gets the one hit kill gun first wins (halo, GoW)

Blindfolded with your hands taped to the ceiling. If you manage to remove your hands from said asbestos-lined ceiling it'll be nigh impossible to find the controller to play your preferred FPS. Little do you know that it's taped to your back and covered with anti-personnel mines... so my favourite has to be Fallout 3's VATS. The normal way of handling firearms in that game is rather clunky but there's nothing cooler to see your character blow off a Raider's arm in cinematic slow motion.

I don't think the cover mechanic has been perfected yet. Admittedly I haven't played GOW2, but in most games, including GOW, finding cover is still clunky and doesn't connect well with the flow of a fluidly-paced shooter. It's hard to put your finger on - I think it just needs to be polished and perfected, rather than revolutionised - but the game that gets it right should be mad fun.
