The best way to shoot is sideways.

It's just so cool, chief.
This is exactly what I thought when I saw the thread title. And my mind then followed it up with the reference as well. So, basically, I'm friending you.

In terms of this thread? Run and gun, but not at the same time is what I like. As in, not necessarily stay in cover, but at least approach the fight with some strategy.

I wasn't much for console shooters then I started playing Gears
and I have to say that I LOVE the cover system Gears uses most of all
See, and I can't STAND the gears cover system.
The same button to run, dive, and go against cover? Poop.

Personally, I love the Rainbow Six Vegas cover system.
It's simple, it's easy, and it works so very well.

Out of all the cover systems I've played, I like it the best.

I'll also add that cover systems aren't needed, for me, in FPS games. Whether it's there or not, in other words, isn't a deal breaker. But if companies are going to do it, they better to it right. And so far, for me at least, the Rainbow Six Vegas cover system is the best.

There's no perfect kind.
Halo and Half Life are really cathartic. I like the technical style of Gears too. COD4 is somewhere in between and I usually say that's my favorite FPS.
I really can't say. There's no perfect way to do a shooter.

I don't like cover systems in multiplayer at all. In single player it's OK but usually dumbs down the gameplay because all you do is pop up, shoot, go back into cover, pop out again.. I like being able to shoot on the run as well as use the environment for cover.

I voted 'Run and Gun', though I really like games where you can prone and hide/sneak around if you want to, just without the annoying cover system.

I prefer run and gun for multiplayer, and third person with cover for campaign.

Crouching like CoD. Hide in the grass on Shipment or Bog in CoD4 for extra paranoia!
Cover systems only encourage camping and slow down multiplayer too much.

Every game has cover, be it active or passive.

I like any of the above if it feels right and the AI is appropriate.

I have to say, I've grown rather partial to the third person with cover perspective. A lot better tactical concern when you can see your cover and how well it obscures you, as well as pull neat shot tricks.

gears of war's system is my favorite becuase its system gives far less of an incentive to barge into a fight becuase I can use cover to prevent being shot up mid fight (witch was the reason why when playing halo 3 on legendary my strategy was either make a sneak attack and retreat or run through enemy lines and try to reach a checkpoint often ending with my health bar flashing red at best) and becuase of this, gear's system leads to fewer deaths in both campaign and multi player, than halo 3 in comparison.) mass effect cannot really be classified in the same field becuase its kind of a mix between 3d with cover and run and gun (and cast "spells") or least thats the way i play it

Minor running and gunning, good use of cover and tactical shooting.

(I hate all games that enforce perpetual Rambo-mowdown situations in any gunfights)
