I know and am very good at the English language, which helps with Spanish. I'm in a class for Spanish, but I could probably communicate fairly easily with a Spanish-speaking person based on words I know, similarities between the languages, and knowledge of the words many English words are based on.
I dabbled in Latin (which also helps with Spanish a bit) a couple years ago, and I'm currently attempting to teach myself Russian. So far it's slow, but I'm doing fairly well, I think. I know the words for "yes," "no," "you," "without," "Russian," "American," "army," "baggage," and "grandmother." And I don't know how to make words plural, past tense, possessive, or any such-stuff like that, but I've only just started.
I want to learn Russian because one of my favorite bands, Aria, is Russian. My favorite author(s) (currently) are Arkady and Boris Strugatsky, who are Russian. And one of my favorite games is STALKER: Shadow of Chernobyl, which is based in a Russian-speaking area, despite its being set in Ukraine.
I would like to someday venture outside the US, so languages are important, and it's better to learn early.
