I'm sure if anyone mentioned any of the states in the USA any English person would of heard of them. I'm wondering if the same things goes for Americans with our second largest city (first if you take the word city in the literal sense that London isn't a city.)

Birmingham doesn't strike me as an unknown place. How about Scunthorpe?

Yeah... I was born and lived about 5 miles away from Birmingham. So I win the thread :D

The Americans will have heard of it because of Birmingham Alabama

I'd prefer to keep Birmingham as our dirty little secret. Its full of Brummies.

I've heard of Birmingham, that's where the members of Black Sabbath lived right?
It's where they're from, Ozzy Osbourne was born in Brum!

And what's wrong with being a Brummie? That said, the Black Country is better (about 5 miles down the road), and it's where I was born. Yam Yam West Brom, and all that :)

Birmingham equals a lot more than just Black Sabbath. Here's a list:

Richard Hammond
Cat Deeley
Adrian Chiles (at least, he considers himself an honourary Brummie although he was born near Kidderminster)
Ozzy Osbourne, of course
Tony Hancock
Jasper Carrot
Duran Duran, all members
Jamelia
Nigel Mansell
Toyah Wilcox

So yeah. A lot of influencial and famous people. All born in Birmingham. For more, here's a link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_famous_residents_of_Birmingham,_England

I really do win the thread, it seems... :p

Liverpool is the sixth largest and London is a conurbation not a city.

Thanks, wasn't it heavily bombed in WWII?
Nope, that was Coventry, about 10 miles southeast of Birmingham. It was a revenge attack for the Dresden bombings that we did against the Germans.

Liverpool is the sixth largest and London is a conurbation not a city.
London itself is a city, it's simply very small. It's only a proper city near the centre, Westminster and the inner parts and all that. It is still a city. Greater London is the conurbation and that stretches out along the Thames. As for Birmingham, it's the second city of the UK, not Manchester, although it's only a city like London is. Quite small, but part of what's known as the West Midlands Conurbation which stretches from Birmingham for about 10 miles all around, then northwest to the nearby city of Wolverhampton, southwest towards Dudley and Stourbridge, and connected to Coventry in the southeast by the motorway.

EDIT: Sorry for the double post...
