As many of you know to day is Black Friday, The day where normally sane, normal people go batshit crazy just for the new Tickle Me Elmo doll or whatever kids these days are playing with. How do you feel about this wrenched day? Are you going out to brave the psychotic crowds or would you rather not have to be scraped off the floor of a Toys R Us by some poor bastard who makes minimum wage?

Also for those strange people who do go out, got any horror stories?

I don't partake in it due to my one and only experience with the horrid day about 4 years ago.

I was drawn in by media hype into buying and craving one of the most useless pieces of technology ever to exist; the Nintendo Wii.

I went insane trying to get one and every attempt to try and get it was met with failure and me having to deal with the batshit crazy people who go out at 4AM to get... whatever the hell it is they're trying to get. What happened though has caused me to forever stay away from stores on that day. Take note that this happened in my town and it wasn't just something I had heard from some other city.

A guy who tried to get a Wii was stampeded and killed by a crowd of people. No one called an ambulance for him and he sat there for 2 hours, slowly dying. To make matters worse... he actually got a Wii and someone took it from him as he laid there dying...

So from then on, I don't partake in it. Ever.

That's almost as sad as the security guard at the Wal-Mart who was trampled while he tried to keep the peace when the doors open a few years ago. Did you know that the steel door frame was bent from the force of all the people surging through?

I honestly don't understand it. People go that crazy and can kill people all for a sale.

Are we really that bad of a species that we kill others for the potential to get something so trivial?

I have no idea why we do it, we just do. All I know is some people take it way to seriously; for example, a guy in my area actually stabbed another guy in the throat over the last Tickle Me Elmo doll on the shelf. The other guy died and the stabber was arrested and the doll taken in as evidence.

I do agree that this is horrible that people will go to such lengths for a gift that has only been marked down a few dollars.

....What the hell is with that? What kind of batshit insane deals must there be to get people killed!?

I live in australia, the only Black Friday we have was when bushfires all over killed around 70 people. (From Memory)

Jesus, man for a fucking Tickle Me Elmo? o_O
It's not even a good gift! It baffles me how crazy people go when something is 5% off.
Seriously, that's the best deal going round here. Sure, some of the stuff is good, but worthy of murdering another human for it? Fuck no!

...What...the...fuck...

Are you shitting me?

I do not believe you. Why would no one call? Calling does not make you lose your place in line!

They had nothing too lose!

They stole a dyeing mans possessions and refused to let him live after pretty much killing them.

I hope to god that they were punished.
Karma probably got them in the end, but it was the result of a stampede. No one was really to blame in particular, I suppose, but it's just fucking crazy that no one even cared enough to call someone. A simple call is all it would have taken.

It's from UFO Ultramaiden Valkyrie.

Despite my normal habit of avoiding large crowds like the plague, I absolutely love going out on Black Friday.Though I've many managed to avoid most of the crazies.

Is it a good anime?

OT:still in shock. jesus christ.
Great anime, yes. Very cute. I've told you this before as well. It's a harem/scifi/action/comedy.
If you're into that, you'll like it.

We don't really have anything like this in Sweden. Sure, people are buying christmas presents in november-december, but no stampedes or anything. But if there was, I'd probably wait until mid-december to do my christmas shopping.
Really, a mass-produced doll is not quite worth stabbing someone to death for.

I live in the U.K, so our Black Friday is the last Friday before Christmas - traditionally it's the most popular night for work/office parties. The large number of drunken revellers on the streets at closing time has caused some to dub Black Friday as Black Eye Friday, due to the number of fights that tend to break out. Both police and ambulance services rate Black Eye Friday as on of the busiest of the year.

Well Black Friday is a new concept to me, nothing I've heard over the pond before,

I... I just don't get it, it seems to be a concept that has invented itself, a rare occurrence indeed.

How do people fall for this idea of some day of sales? A quick wiki gives me the impression that it stemmed from someone saying that Black Friday is the sales day which lead to people joining in and snowballing the whole damn thing

I'm pretty shocked that we as a society have let this advantage be taken of us, I really don't get it.

Seems pretty ridiculous though, I'll be staying in today

Black what now?

"Black Xday" in the UK usually refers to a stock market crash of monumental proportions e.g. Black Wednesday in the early 90's recession when the £ fell out of the ERM.

so
I would have to answer: "It's not a big deal in my area"

Well I was going to do a big chunk of my gift shopping this weekend so wish me luck for the crowds, I might have to employ a bit of Frank West style to get through the hordes!

Thinking about it, I've never been out on Black Friday. I booked today and next monday off work though to get some shopping done. So there's sales today? Perfect.
