If you get at least three players going you can start at twilight then notice that the sun's just coming up and suddenly realize you'd been playing all night without noticing the time.
:p And there-in lies the problem. Not many people have time to play a game for six hours, have lunch, come back for another six hours, eat dinner, play some videogames, call your friends back over the next day and finish up.

I like Risk too, but unless you're playing a videogame version (which I've yet to see one that I don't think the dice are completely full of shit), it takes forever and seven days to finish a game of Risk.

We usually slaughtered each other through multiple games in a night. How glacially slow do your dice roll? :)

Never EVER mention Monopoly in the polls or in any form of writing ever AGAIN!

Either ways I still play Tabletop Games but in the form of cards. I always felt the compatibility to play it with friends is a lot better than most board games.

Here are my favorite Tabletop Games:
Magic: The Gathering
Fluxx 4.0
Munchkin 1-8

Magic: The Gathering has always been the best collectible card game for me. But I would like to share with people really great family games in the form of Fluxx 4.0 and the Munchkin Series.

How many players do you usually play with? Because any time we play, it's normally at least 5. And between all the conspiring and backstabbing that takes place, turns tend to drag on.

That and one of my brother's is really anal about rolling the dice, convinced that rolling them on a table doesn't actually roll them, they just land and slide. So he makes us pass around the box top and basically throw the dice in there like we're shooting craps. :p

OT: Also, Stratego is another game that hasn't been mentioned yet that's very fun. But if you're going that far into strategy-based games, I might as well go full nerd and mention the greatest strategy game of all time: Chess. :3

We can vary between two to five or six. You're right about how too many players can drag the game on.

OT: If we're going to bring out REALLY classic strategy games then there's nothing like a good old game of Go.

Which I suck at, to be honest. I need to download a 'Go' game from somewhere and get some experience at it.

Yeah, with two or three people there's not nearly as much "Alright, if you help me take that, then I'll pull out of this so you can take it. Then I'll solidify my boarder her and let you have that if you promise not to attack me here for three turns." Only to have the guy brokering the deal simply say screw it and attack the guy he was dealing with just because someone else's turn left a good opening. :p

Don't get me wrong, I really enjoy Magic as well, but it's not quite a board game...most board games don't require a significant monetary investment to keep up to date with it...and be good at it. :p

While I'm not sure this is the right forum I thought I would at least start this here. Technically board games are gaming so I figure I might have the right place.

That being said...

I have just started getting into board games such as Settlers of Catan and Kingdom Builder. I find that I am better at card based games though (Poison, Citadels, Glory to Rome(Black Box)). There is a regular group that meets most Fridays and I have been trying to pick up different games without a lot of success.

I am wondering if anyone out there in Escapist land has any experience and can recommend anything. I have just ordered a copy of Citadels and Glory to Rome since they are both card based and I seem to get the hang of them pretty fast.

Anyone else have any recommendations for games to look into?

Edit: poll added to see if there is a board game community here on escapist.
Try Dominion. Its card based and pretty fun. You can pick it up fast too.

Im surprised none mentioned Talisman or the upcoming game Relic (WH40K Talisman) and if your not in the mood for Rp/tabletop/card game then go for a good old fashioned game of BloodBowl Team Manager. truth be told any of the GW specialist games are awesome and don't actually require the same amount of monitory investment as WH: 40K or Fantasy

Settlers of Catan
Arkham Horror
Thunderstone
Ninja Burger
Mage Knight
Twilight Imperium
Wiz-War
Stratego
7 Wonders
Dixit
Anima
Resident Evil DBG
Last Night on Earth
Munchkin
D&D Wrath of Ashardalon

A bunch of others I can't remember off the top of my head

Twilight Imperium and Arkham Horror are my favourtites, but they require at least 4 people to make the most of them, with maxing out the player count making for the best experience. They also take a long time, both to set up and then play through a game, but they are well worth the time and effort.

Mage Knight is also very good, although it also takes a long time to play a single game. It's very good with only 2 or 3 people though, so it has that over AH and TI.

The rest of the games are all varying degrees of fun, though it depends on what games you and your group prefer as well as your mood at the time.

Love board games. My brother has a heap of them and we usually get together with a whole bunch of people and play.

Games I've played are....Talisman, Hero's Quest, Arkham Horror, Ticket to Ride, Amun Ra just to name a few.

Used to play two games, HeroQuest and Battle Masters when I was a kid.

HeroQuest is pretty much babies first D&D and I played it obsessively.

Battle Masters was a strategy game with a MONSTROUS "game board" (it was actually a tarp)that I honestly never played that much.

Big big board game fan.

Alien Frontiers, Castles of Burgundy, Mage Knight, Merchants and Mauraders, Game of Thrones, Junta, Invasion from Outer Space, Pandemic are all personal favorites

Good games for starters are Alien Frontiers (I love that game so so much), Pandemic, Nefarious, Agricola, Stone Age, and Carcassonne.

If you're really into the card part, some other good ones are Dominion (the reigning card champion), Netrunner (not sure if it's out for widespread release yet), Sentinels of the Multiverse, San Juan, and Condotierre.
I totally forgot about alien frontiers. I have played that once or twice but forgot the name. Thanks for the reminder.

You should definitely try playing Fluxx 4.0 and Munchkin with friends. It has the compatibility of card games but the almost chaotic, if not awesome gameplay of board games, for me anyways.

And I know most people here play board games that are close to the D&D nature so I suggest the Munchkin card game series simply because it plays like that with a flare of comedy.

I have Life and Scrabble on my iPad, which I usually play with friends during study hall on school days. That usually keeps me entertained.

WOw, Thanks so much for all the suggestions. I have seen people play Space Munchkins before and I am assuming it is similar to Munchkins. There are a few others that I recognize from watching others play.

I think I saw someone cry over a game of Pandemic, and I know I have seen Seven Wonders. As far as card based games I heard someone say Dominion, any others that come to mind. I am trying to both get more involved myself but also get my wife involved and she prefers the card games as well.

If anyone who responded lives in the San Francisco Bay Area let me know.

StarCraft, Axis and Allies, Carcassonne, DOOM, and Battlestar Galactica are some of my all time favorites. I haven't had a chance to play StarCraft in forever, though....sigh...

Dominion is a card game, but not a trading variety. Comes as a complete set with several expansions available. It is pretty fun.
