Poll: Board Games

Love me some board games, just wish I had people to play them with. I have a large collection I gathered at uni, but a year later and I've only gotten to play them a handful of times with my brother. So far, I have...

1) The LotR board game (co-operative fun).
2) HeroQuest (which I picked up from a charity shop for £1.99. It's missing one bit of cardboard to elevate the tomb, but besides that everything it there).
3) Talisman (second edition).
4) Zombies!!! (plus the School and Carnival expansion).
5) An old DnD boardgame not quite similar to HeroQuest.

From the card games category, I have...

1) Munchkin.
2) Space Hulk: Death Angel (the card game, and fortunately single player).
3) Gloom.

I've been eyeing up Elder Sign of late, and Small Worlds (damn you Tabletop!). As my brother keeps complaining that the games are far too focused on luck, I'm thinking he might like Small Worlds.

I just ordered Descent: Journeys in the Dark, looking forward to it arriving. Fantasy Flight Games always have good quality components and I have heard good reports from friends about this game. I have bunch of other games but am too lazy to list them at this time of the morning.

I love board games.
I haven't played many, just the standard sort of ones everyone's played like monopoly, risk, mousetrap, cludo (I believe it's just called clue in the US), trivial pursuit, pictionary, etc etc.

I would be open to more but I don't have the cash to invest in them.

BattleCon: War of Indines is a cool fusion of fighting game and card game. You position your avatar on a 2D plane playing board and use cards to execute your moves. You pull from two types of hands to form custom moves on the fly. The game is about strategy and anticipating what your opponent will do, which you can do by looking at his recent discards and knowing their character-- because there's only about 12 move cards total per character? So, if you see 4 of their cards in their discard pile, you know which moves they can't do.

Everything is in the box. No booster packs or buying individual cards for a billion dollars. There's even a print and play for free version. It's also on iOS for free, but it crashes a ton (I've never finished a game). The physical version is nice, but it is a bit pricey at $40? I'm not sure about longetivity as the game can feel a bit too random and luck-based. However, it's very fun. It's 2, 3 or 4 players. 1v1, 2v1 or 2v2. It's fun. getting the urge to crack open the Twilight Imperium boxes though, haven't played that in a while.

Try Dominion. Its card based and pretty fun. You can pick it up fast too.

Yes. Dominion is awesome. I've only played two games of it, but both ended up being very fun and required very different strategies. To anybody that hasn't played it, you're missing out.

My pen and paper RPG group has taken a bit of a break from D&D lately to play more board games and I've actually really found myself liking what we've played, even if the setup time can bit a bit ridiculous (looking at you Arkham Horror).

Last time we met up we played a game called Tomb, which was pretty fun because each player got a chance to be a DM for a brief moment. It went by really fast, with three players we got a full game in less than 2 1/2 hours.

Other games we've played that I would highly recommend:

Munchkin + any expansion

Munchkin Quest. A little hard to set up, but a good change of pace if you're a massive munchkin fan

Talisman. Now granted I've only ever played an older edition, but this is all the fun of D&D without any of the work.

RISK 2122. Do you like RISK? Do you also like going to bed at an appropriate hour and not having to disown three friends in the process? This is a great take on the game because it's cut down to 5 turns each player, and you win by how many points you have, which can be earned multiple ways.

RoboRally. This is another one of those older games, but man it's a lot of fun and is pretty strategic too. Can be a little frustrating if you program your moves wrong, but still a solid game.

Illuminati. This one is pure strategy, but it can be a little confusing.

Arkham Horror. Takes forever to setup, but if you're a fan of Lovecraft then this game is definitely worth your time.


Those are all the big games we have played lately, all of them fun.

Huh, really didn't expect so many boardgame players. Noone I know plays 'em. I don't either btw, never really found any I loved.

Fantasy Flight Games have brought back Netrunner which in my opinion was infinitely better than Magic The Gathering.

in fact just go browse Fantasy Flight as they have such a great selection including many of my favourite old Games Workshop stuff like Fury Of Dracula.
