I have a kill preference which I'll list down here:

1) Convince to join (use their ammo and have THEM kill MY enemies)

2) Precise proxy. Hacking would be the best thing here. Turn their defenses against them.

3) Auto-proxy. Traps like claymores and such go here.

4) Long range, but quiet. A suppressed, high powered sniper rifle is my favorite in this spot.

5) Stealth kill. If I can get up to you without you noticing, I'll take you down that way.

6) Precise shots. If there's a low chance of me hitting you, I won't even bother.

7) Explosives. Generally reserved for large groups, explosives can be useful for taking out a single target. I cite grenades and launchers.

8) Spray and Pray. I do this only when there are no other options and I have no actual means of locating you.

Why not do both?

OT: Efficiency. Ever since the first FPS, efficient shooters have always won against spray-n'-pray-ers.

Surgical Precision.
The ability to remove a man's finger from 700 yards just feels soooo good.

I try to be all-around lethal whenever I play games like that. A combination of long-range support, mid-range precision strikes, and close-quarters overwhelming might. So Im not sure what that makes me.

Efficiency, there is nothing cooler than dropping an unsuspecting guy with one shot.

Though I don't play COD or any shooters like that, I'm assuming this question can also be applied to life.

Well NOT refering to any fps where bullet spam is the best all round tactic. Before i continue, Snipers lining up for that perfect one shot kill? you target just stepped back around that corner he came out of, and theres someone behind you with a shotgun and doesnt look too friendly.

Back to my point, this is more easily applied to RTS games where the brute force is a about 50 late game tanks or equivalent, and fine percison is a commando unit and maybe a few supports snuck in on an APC through a hole in your foes defecnes.

Ive seen and pulled off both of the above and theyre both equally satisfying, but fine percision is much easier to start with mostly because you can make the units quicker and it costs much less. The brute force method is a more absolute method but it takes alot of time and cash to biuld up the tanks and theres a fair chance your foe will find out and do something about it, probably with a well placed nuke.

Best is usually a combo of both, have the brute force on an attack move into your victims base, his attention will be focused there now, punch a hole in his defences on another side then add some specialised anti-biulding units and take down the base while hes distracted.

Both really. I always carry a sniper rifle for when i need to pick off an enemey from farther away to save a mate, but pack a machine gun wtih a scope so that if it comes down to it i can spray the motherf-ker that dared to get close enough to me with enough bullets to make him paste.

I love shotguns and explosives, both of which are pure brute force.
However you must be delusional if you think that you can use them to bruteforce your way in, they require tactics (hint: when you are using a shotgun, don't engage in a hallway).

There's only one shot that counts, and it's the one that paints the wall with their brains.

So I've always been a fan of precision.

When you play games like Call of Duty or Battlefield or even Medal of Honor, do you prefer weapons with overwhelming force, or surgical precision?

We're assuming that Sniper rifles do not represent "Brute Force".
Depends on who or what I'm facing. If it's close quarters, then brute force. But if it's range or clear avenues of sight, then I go for surgical precision
