I say Squirtle. I don't rememeber the stats exactly but didn't Blastoise had a better overall stats compared to the other two (I'm not 100% sure)?
Beside Venusaur and Charizard has more weakness due the two being dual types while Blastoise is just plain olde water type.
Originally Charizard was only Fire. In Yellow he could learn Fly and in Gold and Silver he was Fire/Flying.

OT: Charmander

2. Surf on a permanent party member = win.
Implying anyone doesn't buy the Magikarp at the start and evolve it into Garydos before even facing the Cerulean Gym.

In terms of overall effectiveness and flexibility with move sets, Squirtle is the best starter. I clearly has an advantage over Charmander and later Bulbasaur when it learns moves like Ice Bean and Blizzard.

Personally, I prefer Charmander. He provides more of a challenge in the game, forces you to catch and train other Pokemon, and once he evolves into Charizard and learns Slash (which was overpowered in Gen 1), he can pretty much mow down any Pokemon.

If I'm Metagaming, I go Charizard as there's no decent Fire type pokemon for ages where as Butterfree and Garydos are decent grass and water and you get them early.

If just playing, Bulbasaur because he's awesome!

I gotta say, my vote was Squirtle but these comments have opened my eyes to the power of a bulbasaur. Surf was great to have though.

It's a competition between Charmander and Squirtle, if you ask me. Charmander evolves into a Dragon, one that can use Fly. Squirtle evolves into a burly tortoise with two bazooka's.

I think Squirtle wins.

I'd go with squirtle. It is the most defensive out of the three and could take out the other two (once full evolved) with the right moveset.

I chose Charmander because I'm a high attack and speed guy. With the right move set, high attack and high speed I could take out almost anything with Charizard in one or two hits, including Blue's Blastoise at the same level.

I always liked Squirtle.

I've always had an affinity for water in a practical sense (I love swimming and the beach) and in personality sense (I've always been an adaptable, go-with-the-flow kinda guy).

Also, Squirtle is the most adorable of the three, in the game and in the anime.

Wow, Squirtle is winning the poll by a lot. It's good to see so many Squirtle fans!

Squirtle. I admit I like Wartortle better than Squirtle but either way if you use them right they're freakin tanks. Plus they just look cool. A tortoise with cannons in its shell? Heck yeah!

Why must I pick only one? When I first got the game my cousin and I sat on my couch, our Game boys linked via cable, and I restarted enough times so that we each had one of each starter AND I had enough for my friends at school. Even back that I was determined to catch them all, and catch them all I did. But, cleverness aside, I'd say... Bulba gets my love. He tears through the first 3 gyms like it ain't no thing. And look at him, he's kinda got a u mad bro face going on.

Squirtle.

It can learn strong water moves, it can learn BLIZZARD/Ice beam, and it turns into a LIVING TANK.

I know that Charmeleon is a total badass, and Charizard is a freakin DRAGON, but still...Blastoise is my favourite Pokemon ever for a reason.

I always liked Charmander, because firstly the little ************ is on fire, and secondly it evolves into something more dragon like than most of the dragon types, and is still on fire! Sod it if I had to go the extra for the first few gym leaders, totally worth it!

Exactly, he becames a beast when he becomes fully evolved, especially so when Charizard learns Fire Blast. Plus he turns into a freaking dragon, how is that not badass?
