Spend your money on something else. This WoW is the same WoW that came out 6 years ago. It's old, stale, grindtastic and has a community full of asshats with ego's the size of Jupiter.
Try the free trial for the sake of doing so, but give your self a treat and buy something else that is fresh, nice and isn't Modern Grayfare or Call of Brown...

Play the free trial. I got 14 days or something like that but decided I was done after about 3. It got real boring real fast. It's definitely not for everyone. I'm sure it gets better, but I didn't have the patience for it.

WoW is a learning experience similar to Half Life 2, Final Fantasies after 6, Heavy Rain, Metal Gear, and Pokeymanns: It will make you appreciate your good games and hate humanity a little.

As many people have said, try the 10 day free trial. There's links to it everywhere. It's what got me hooked. Course when I got to level 80 is when I got unhooked. That was after a year of playing though

Also, OP, if you want to and can afford to, go for it. But the sale only lasts for five days or so.

WoW is a bit of a grind, but I actually found it rather fun once I got into it. I started on a new server, so it wasn't filled up with douchebags and the like, and the community was really nice. Admittedly there was a reasonable amount of repetition, but on the flip side, there are also hundreds of different quests - the more recent of which actually have you doing some pretty cool stuff.

On the other hand, I ended up playing wow something like six hours a day and had to give it up maybe six months ago.

About that; some of the gameplay actually changed significantly with the release of wrath of the Lich King, and I hear they're applying all the new things to the lower levels for cataclysm.

It's style of gameplay seems very dull to me since the game seems to play itself for you. I'd go with the free trial first, not that my opinion matters much since I've never played it. I probably never will no matter how flawless it is or becomes either since I don't like the idea of continuing to pay for a game I already payed for once.
