When it comes to subscriptions for Call of Duty games, Bobby Kotick thinks
"audiences are clamoring for it."
as stated in this article on The Escapist earlier in an interview with the Wall Street Journal:
http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/101503-Kotick-Wants-Call-of-Duty-Subscriptions-Tomorrow

So, Escapists, what do you think of this statement?

I've got my Counter Strike: Source. It's basically the same thing, but I get Zombie Modes all of the time and plenty of awesome maps.

And after reading that article... it sounds like he's trying to create an MMO with it. Like an Open World MMO, but that might be my optimism speaking.

So wait? People are "clamoring" to pay extra money for something??

That makes absolutely no sense at all, and if it is true, then I hate everyone.

I think he just sees the MMO success of WoW and wants to exploit that from shooter fans. Make an MMO, yes he wants that, because of how efficent WoW is: launched in '04, still going strong, only 1 game made, and only 1 games budget. That's what he wants.

I doubt that it will mean a subscription fee for COD as we know it because lets be honest the games become repetative and boring after 5/6 weeks and leave me thinking that the £39.99 was actualy too much.

The subscription will probably be for some kind of new MMOFPS game

There's a reason that I don't play WOW... I refuse to paw a monthly subscription to a game that I already payed for.... And if Activision actually impliments it... Well, I just won't buy their games... Simple as that.

That's what the rumors of what Sledgehammer Games is making CoD wise. A new CoD "action" game. Nothing specific though. I think it's a guraentee that it will happen at some point. Especially if he wants to start charging us for MW2 tomorrow.

So he thinks that people want to give him money, even though he is one of the most hated people by the gaming community? He's crazy.
I'll probably be getting the new Medal of Honor game instead of Black Ops.

I think its a good idea. Mix up CoD a bit. Im getting kinda sick of.CoD. You have to hand it to the Man, he sure knows how to make money. And that's what matters, Video Games are a Business. If a Million people play cod every day, why not charge them? So what if you lose a 3rd of the players, its still a shit load of money.

Well, you can't fault his logic as a lot of people will pay for it... I just would have liked to see an Open World Call of Duty, with just massive maps and a lot of people playing on opposing sides at any time. I guess I won't see that for a while.

Could have called it Call of Duty: Defcon 1 -- since they took World at War already, which ironically would have been perfect for this.

Agreed.
OT: I thought this would be more game-like, like;
Bobby Kotik is so stupid, he didn't call the ifinity ward team that made him rich...er to duty.

I'm fantastically anxious to see their subscription model. Not because I've any interest in paying it, but I wonder to what greedy depths this asshole might sink. Will the monthly fee cover updates and map packs, or is it simply for server access? Will they have the balls to charge $10 a month for this bullshit? Will we all be absolutely shocked when there are enough idiots shelling out for MW3 to more than compensate for the sensible folk flocking to BF:BC3?

I think the game you may be looking for is MAG, but that is different then what you are talking about. What you are thinking would be amazing: 2 sides, and a constant battle. It would end up being more like a persistent Battlefield game then a CoD game. And yes, that title would be perfect.

And what's worse is that they have the money to actually make the game and they had the team. May still do with Treyarch, since with what their planning with Black Ops - and if they pull that off - I'd name them to develop such a game. Give them a wide berth with it and... I'd just let the money roll in from there.

But I forgot that Bobby Kotick can't think rationally or put two and two together. So I might as well give up on seeing such a game become a reality -- at least with Activision at the helm.
