You're all probably aware of what happened with Activision and Infinity Ward a fair while back, leaving us with only Treyarch working on the CoD franchise (You're probably aware that both IF and Treyarch would work on seperate games at the same time so that more CoD games would be out faster, this being why the games would come out Treyarch, Infinity Ward, Treyarch, Infinity Ward, etc, etc), and I'm constantly reading that people believe Treyarch to be inferior, but I've never seen anyone state it themselves, so it makes me wonder; is this the communities stance? Which developer of the two did you think created better games for the series and why? (This isn't about whether or not you think the series is now all about money, has turned to shit, the people who talk are jackasses, etc, etc. Keep that crap outta here).
Personally I'd like it if Treyarch was more willing to listen to the community, They continue to add infinetly spawning enemies who are constantly throwing grenades that can never run out, despite the fact that these functions have been universally despised and panned from all corners, whilst IF was still able to create functional levels without using either of these horrible mechanics.
good, not at all over hyped or overrated IW games?
call of duty
modern warfare (though probably weakened by the mere existance of mw2)
good treyarch games (call of duty related)
world at war (to an extent, mostly just the russian missions)
modern warfare port (shut the hell up right now, it was a good port, nothing more, and nothing less)
Black ops
and considering nobody ever gives a crap about treyarch, they never get hyped or overrated (until blops, but thats debatable) so id say that treyarch has the upper hand here, they proved the smug asses at IW wrong, three freaking times, and black ops kicks the shit outta modern warfare 2 any day.
plus, zombie mode is classic, and IW fanboys are just mad the world's most popular apocalypse scenario didnt show its face in an IW game.
I'll say Treyarch, only because I like neither devs online mode (except for Nazi zombies, and I've only played that a few times) and out of the two story modes, BlOps beats MW2.
That said I'm not rhat fussed about the franchise, so overall: meh.
I respect I.W for introducing me for a decent multiplayer back in the days of COD 1-2. But i love Trayarch for COOP with Zombies. And Trayarch´s level design in multiplayer these days is far more enjoyable.
COD 3 was a disaster.
Infinity Ward started the franchise, and always had the most consistency in quality.
Say what you want about MW2's various problems, but it was addictive, plus the campaign was fun as was spec ops.
Anyway i have to say Treyarch are the better developer when it comes to mature violance, long campaigns and zombies, but Infinity Ward's games seem technicaly surperior, you can't say that Modern Warfare 2's graphics and weaponry didn't feel fun to look at.
The only thing i can say about Blops's graphics is "Is this really the best you can do treyarch?"
EDIT: BTW isn't IW like dead? didn't they get fired or something and now they can't support mw2 anymore?
Treyarch has got one big plus-side, they listen to the community. That is exactly the reason that makes Black Ops much better than MW2, IW on the other hand has got better technology, but if I have to choose, I'd rather have a game that is balanced and fun but with lesser graphics and sound than a game that has got outstanding sounds and graphics, but overpowered classes (quickscope, noobtube).
This is IMO, I completely understand if you like MW2 better, I personally just like Treyarch more.
EDIT: this is right now, i have not played games pre-MW1 except the singleplayer of COD1 so I can't say anything about that.
I'ma get my rant on here ^_^
This is entirely from a multiplayer standpoint, mostly about balancing issues, as multiplayer is what you're going to be playing 99% of the time with games like these.
Don't get me wrong, CoD4 was good. It still had some problems (which people seem to forget as it's gotten to the point of "classic" because of how many CoD games have been released so far), however:
-The spawns weren't amazing, but I can let that slide as I don't think any CoD is going to get that right.
-The M16 ruled everything because it was a two-bullet kill with stopping power, making it a shotgun up close and a one-burst kill anywhere else.
-Infinity Ward is TERRIBLE at community support post-release. Remember the G3 knife glitch? Never got fixed. Explosives? Frag x3 along with sonic boom made domination unbearable. etc. etc.
WaW was a game that tried quite hard to compensate for what CoD4 got wrong, and got that right for the most part.
-Treyarch made bigger maps to help stabalize spawns, and that worked for the most part. An artillery strike on Dome was still spawn-killy death, but most maps didn't have you spawn-trapped like Strike did in CoD4.
-ARs were toned down, giving SMGs a chance to shine. The increased map size helped the ARs compensate for the lack of a one-burst-kill god weapon.
-Treyarch listens to their community. They patched their game within a week of it being released when problems arose. Take notes, IW.
-Explosives were brought down in power such that you were only going to be using them for two things: killing a tank, or bringing down campers. After MW2, I think we're fine with that, no?
On to MW2, the game that seals the deal for Treyarch being better than IW for me. So, so unbalanced, I don't know how people play that game to be honest.
-Bad spawns in CoD4? That sure was fixed with OMA noobtubers and overpowered killstreaks. You get spawn-trapped in CoD4. You can spawn-killed in MW2.
-ARs too powerful in CoD4? Surely you jest says IW, and bumps the ARs up even higher by giving us the laser-beam ACR, giving the M16 a level-one-unlock twin, and making SMGs useless by giving us machine pistol and shotgun secondaries.
-Did I mention IW was bad at community support? Well I can't mention that enough. Frag x3 was a bother in CoD4, but OMA noobtubers could literally block off entire routes indefinitely. Killstreaks were too powerful? Too bad, IW's not going to change that. Have a secondary weapon that outguns most primary weapons?
Exhibit A:IW's balancing at work.
It took IW months to patch this. And they didn't even patch it correctly! I didn't stick around to see if they repatched it, though I doubt it.
There are those that would make the argument that "You get it at a really late level, it better be good!"
They seem to forget about how the CoD series is about unlocking different options, not better ones. In CoD4, the last gun you unlocked was a throwback weapon that was a neutered AK47. In MW2, your last AR was the F2000,which was essentially a neutered TAR-21 and had literally no redeeming factors. Your last pistol was the desert eagle, which was essentially a neutered revolver that you got early on. Your last LMG was essentially a neutered version of the MG4 that you got early on. Seeing the pattern? Not ot mention, they were secondaries, as in your alternative when your primaries weren't an option. With these, your primaries never had to be an option.
I'll stop there, I could go on all day with MW2. Suffice it to say, I am SO GLAD Infinity Ward is no longer at the reigns.
Now on to Black Ops.
-The spawns are decent, nothing amazing but you aren't getting spawn-killed by an AC-130 half the time so I'm okay with this.
-The ARs are in a good position. The M16/G11 are both three-bullet kills, meaning you need to hit all three of your bullets to kill, meaning that in close range hipfiring means doom to you. So they're only superior if you hit all three bullets at mid-range. If you don't, you're taking another burst to kill, which takes the two guns down to having the worst time to kill in the game. So yeah, you need to aim carefully.
-Explosives are back where they should be. They are more powerful than they were in WaW (WaW went a little overkill in responding to the explosives complaints in CoD4 anyway, tbh), but you cannot scavange new explosives off dead bodies. Meaning that they are more effective at bringing down campers, but you can't use them to reliably get a higher killstreak than you would if you actually had to aim.
-Speaking of, the killstreaks are brought back into a decent place. They are less powerful and you can't get a killstreak by using a previous one. As in, no more "Okay, I got the predator missile. If I can get a lucky double kill off the enemy as they spawn, I can get a harrier, which can hopefully clean up the enemy to my chopper gunner/AC-130 while I sit here watching a single doorway from a corner, so I can continue to sit in that corner while using my chopper gunner/AC130 to spawn kill them!"
-The spawnkilling with killsteaks has also been fixed by a recent update that has a delay on when the player-controlled killstreaks assist you in killing a player, so that the player doesn't get spawnkilled. He has a shot to pull out his strelas and blast the thing down. Killstreaks are a privilege in MW2, not a right.
-Of course, that delay wouldn't have happened had Treyarch not listened to their community and implemented their changes post-haste. The same was done about the sniper rifles, and I'm sure more things in the future.
[HEADING=3]tl;dr
Treayarch makes better games because unlike Infinity Ward:
-They have half a brain when it comes to balance, and
-When something does slip through the cracks, they listen to their community and patch it.[/HEADING]
Anyway i have to say Treyarch are the better developer when it comes to mature violance, long campaigns and zombies, but Infinity Ward's games seem technicaly surperior, you can't say that Modern Warfare 2's graphics and weaponry didn't feel fun to look at.

I'd say it's a blurry line as to whether or not this is a VS thread, it's a blurry line I'd forgotten to consider, but it was made clear to keep most trolls out and so long as people don't start flinging shit at eachother things should be fine.
Back onto the rest of your post though. Infinity Ward is indeed gone (They may still have a skeleton cry running it, but it's not the original staff since the incident), that's why my phrasing used the word "was". I am still including black ops in the the comparison though.
Personally, I look at it this way.
I always had more fun and had a better feeling of balance in all the treyarch games.
I also actually liked cod3, though I played it when I was younger, so I do not remember much.
I don't give 2 shits about multiplayer. SO in terms of Singleplayer: CoD4 had a simple but good narrative. Mw2 fucked that up by filling the story with horse crap. Black Ops tried to do something genuinely interesting with the whole "mental twist" at the end, and if the ending had a bit more depth and maturity to it (navy photo-op in the sunset is just Inexcusable) i would vote for Treyarch in a heartbeat. But as it stands: I go with DICE and Bad company2......what neither of them are "good" dev teams! ok fine, IW.
