On a personal note:
I know some of you are pack rats and collect those wonderful hidden gem games that reek of excellence and good quality, even if they are old, and I would like to give credit to Age of Wonders 2, which is sadly not on the list because most people haven't played it. If you have, more power to ya, if not, if you got a little extra money and a PC i highly recommend it. If your a fan of the turn based games your sure to love it.
cheers

I found the mixture of diverse units and the ability to build any structure any where I want (resources or not) to be a rich experience.... Plus the undead rock.

Fire emblem seems conspicuously absent from this list.

supream commander requires a fair ammount of stratagy to play well but the same can be said about many of these games.

'Cause I'm pretty sure in terms of turn based games thats almost the simplest you can get. Try Heroes of Might and Magic 5.

The mechanics are simple, the strategies are complex.

endwar company of heros and supcom were all good but endwar online was made entirely of artty company of heros puts some factions at a greater advantage at the start and end and the balance is fucking aweful supcom in my mind is a eco rts ONLY because for battle you spam maybe 2 or 3 units and the only one that regularly fights is tanks and games rarely ever get past early game

halowars is fun for me (prepares for bashing)

favourite lately is montjoie!.

its set during the hundred years war and built from and directly like a board game and features an excellent balance between planning, resource management, and luck. its a very dynamic little game. highly recommended.

Uh... chess?
Or how 'bout Go?
Now THAT takes strategy. If you aren't thinking at least 10 moves ahead, you aren't going to win unless the person you're playing is terrible.

I like the classic C&C series. Not sure which I'd say is my favorite. Currently stuck between Tiberium Wars & either Red Alert 2 or 3. Note when I say 'classic', I don't mean the C&C from 1995 or so.

No advance wars? That game required a massive amount of strategy, espeically on the harder version which gave your enemy stupidly huge amounts of units.

Chess. With most RTSs, you can pretty much just make it up as you go along. Most pre-planning comes from resource collection in anticipation of building certain units.

In Chess, you gotta know every possible move your pieces can make, and every possible move your opponent's pieces can make. Also, you gotta know what moves they can make for the next dozen rounds, and what moves your opponent is likely to make.

I enjoy tactics games over strategy: Company of Heroes and Dawn of War 2 are among my favorites. Myth was great, too. I like the fact that you can't overcome poor battlefield management and strategy with a vastly superior economy as is possible in AoE/the Crafts.

As for Chess, sure it's a classic and all, but it ain't visceral. Though I'd never pass up a game of Chess on one of those park-sized boards.

Total war needs to be on that list. You'll get your ass kick if you haven't got a master plan.

For me it was between Chess and Age of Empires. I was thinking chess at first, but AoE has alot more factors to think about and ways to achieve victory. Then again, you can win a game of AoE with just a general idea, whereas you need a really good plan to put up a fight in chess.

Civilization definitely. You have to know what you'll do before you even begin to play, and juggle a million different things at once.

I thought total war's battles required a lot of concentration and tactical appraisal...until you got to a castle siege. Then it was a total fucking attackers get shit pwned out of them till defenders get bored...
