I call my Mother by her first name and she gets quite upset when i do it. [even thou she gets my name wrong on a daily basis]. Strangely thou she won't get upset if my brother calls her by her first name.

But what do you guys think about calling your parents by there first name.

I personally say it because i don't see my mother as a mother figure. Nor do i respect her enough to call her 'mum'.

What do I think about it, or do I do it?

I think it's a cute idea. Shows mutual respect, and less of a greater/lesser person relationship, which is what parenting should be about, in my opinion. Very foreign concept to me, admittedly, because I grew up in a very old-fashioned place (even if my family was different, it's still odd feeling). I do find it interesting when I see people who do it, though.

I support the idea, but I don't do it, personally.

Only my stepdad on a regular basis. I call my mum by her first name when she's ignoring me.

Nah, it feels kinda weird to call them by their names.

I suspect that I will always refer to them as mum & dad.

I do it to my parents simply to get their attention. "Mum. Mum. Mum. MUM!" Seems to have been drilled out of my mother. But I call hr by her first name, I get an instant response.

I could never call them by their first names... and it bugs me whenever I hear someone else do exactly that to their own parents.

It's sort of complicated. When I speak to them directly, I use "Mamma" for my mother (yeah, I know, it's sort of a joke that has stuck) and dad for my dad. But often times when I talk about my parents to someone, I use their first names.

I might call a parent by their first name if I'm trying and failing to get their attention for something.

Only call them by their first name when I need their attention and they're blanked out. Other than that its Mum and Dad. Makes sense after all, they are my Mum and Dad.

I find it messed up. OP, you've clearly got issues that therapy or counselling may help with, but that's neither here nor there.

Yep, I do. All my family members call each other by the first name.
I'm so used to it that I find it very weird when I hear other people referring to their relatives by their 'family status'.

Dad normally gets called Dad, when he pisses me off he gets the first name. Mother is called by her first name, she's just done so much (which is quite meager by other people's standards) that has lost me calling her Mum. I acknowledge her role, I know she is my Mother, but we are of equal ground, she might be my parent, but she is not above me.

I do it if my mum doesn't pay attention and she wouldn't listen to me otherwise.

But generally I don't call my parents by their first name.
