Just an idea but can people start giving some examples of games that back up their opinions?

Both, beacuse it really depends on the kind of mood im in. If I want to blow off some steam I break out the UT3, Quake Wars or Guild Wars. But if I want to relax, enjoy myself ill grab my guitar and rock out to some Beast and the Harlot, or play some Super Mario galaxy/Twilight Princess.

So both are important to keep up with the ever-changing demands to todays modern consumer.

Multiplayer tends to get really repetitive for me. I don't like spawning into the same map that I've already done ten times that day with the generic goal of "kill them blue guys" or "get the flag" or what have you.

I'm aware that there are other forms of gameplay besides deathmatch and CTF, but it seems like most gamers forget about those, and as a result, those are my main gameplay choices. After I've done them about 3 times, I'm bored.

Granted, campaign can get just as redundant, but I don't expect that to last forever. I expect to play the campaign once all the way through, and then maybe replay my favorite parts a few times. There are still people out there playing Counterstrike. HOW ARE THEY STILL DOING THIS? Is it like an MMO, where you just don't realize that you're doing the same thing forever?

Another thing I forgot to point out is that, when you're playing humans vs. the computer, the drive to make it "fair" is no longer present. You don't have to have even teams, or the exact same base on both sides of the featureless canyon. You can have 600 zombies vs 2 people, and that leads to a more epic feeling of winning then my four guys beating your four guys.

In conclusion, I don't think I really "get" multiplayer. Maybe someday...

People online are jackasses who play the game way too much, hence multiplayer is unfun and basically boring. It takes a commitment I am not interested in to get better so I usually stick with the "campaign".

I always play the campaign before busting out the multiplayer, even with Unreal Tournament 3. If the campaign sucks balls, I'm not going to expect the online to be much better. Besides, it lets me get a feel for the controls and weapons. Of course, the multiplayer loses its luster a little bit when you get stuck in a room full of, as yatzee would say, a bunch of hooting dickholes or suburban gangstas. sometimes I'm glad there's a mute button and you don't have to have voicechat to play.

I think game developers need to start putting back great single player campaigns.

ONLINE.DOES.NOT.MAKE.A.GAME.

It can make a good game great, it can make a bad game fair. It can NOT make a shitty game a good one.
THIS.

I no longer have Xbox LIVE, because the people are idiots and I had to mess around with the router every time I wanted to play. I hate games that are mostly multiplayer, because I like immersion, and there's nothing less immersive than Online Multiplayer.

"but unfortunately I don't give a flying shit about multiplayer, and neither do a lot of people" -Yahtzee
funny AND true.
i began hating multiplayer the day that online mode replaced splitscreen and sharescreen.
split=last gen fps
share= sidescrollers

I imagine that they keep doing it for the same reason that people might play one particular sport all their life. Or only have video games as a hobby. Or play the same video game genre for a long time.

I play the campaign until I beat it and if it has coop than with that, when the campaign gets tired I just play the multiplayer until I pass out or something.

Depends on the game,
halo 3 - ok story mode, AMAZING ONLINE insanely addictive (online wins)

COD4 - Great Story, Ok online gets old after abit for me anyway (story wins)

Soul Calibur 4 - including this one because i just got it lol but anyways,
story mode - short as hell abit dissapointing but so many characters its near impossible to complete them all, gets addictive, ONLINE MODE- hard, because everybody online owns me lol,
(i would give story mode the win on this one.)

these are just my opinions, to be honest i only buy games for there story modes.
But i find mmorpgs way more fun and intresting because of the features
e.g. leveling up with friends, no play again screne after death or lives just continues fun etc.

No, see, "playing the same sport" doesn't really wash. I frequently play basketball and while the game is, at it's core, the same thing every time, the experience is more about what it does to the body.

I don't think I understand your point about having video games as a hobby. Assuming we're not counting the folks who live and breathe this stuff, isn't that pretty much all of us?

Same genre I can follow, I suppose, but the difference between Super Mario Bros, Super Mario Bros 3, and Super Mario World are *huge*. Same genre doesn't mean same game.

I do like some multiplayer games, I just don't like to play with people I don't know.
Because I don't have many friends to play with, I only buy games that have a good single player mode.

I'm more of a campaign player than multiplayer guy, though good multiplayer is nice to have. I'll add the caveat, though, that I like a campaign that rewards replay... once-through, heavily-scripted campaigns are a serious turn-off.

For me, it's always both-- first the campaign, then some multiplayer.

In the end, though, I think I'd choose a well-scripted campaign over multiplayer.

Campaign will always have my vote. I play games for the story, and to take on a new persona for a while. In multiplayer, you play a generic character, shooting people for no conceivable reason. There's also the point that for multiplayer to be fun, you have to play enough to be passable, and I don't want to make that commitment.

The results of this poll, given the state of so many games, surprised me. I figured it would be both or multiplayer by a landslide, but it just isn't! Glad to see I'm not alone here.

I always like games that the campaigne and multiplayer are exactly the same, just with more people... that is more a feture in rpg's though... I think they really need both to last the distance nowdays...

I prefer games with compelling campaigns. Even better are games in which you have some ability to customize or somehow change the campaign. That's why I like deep RPG's like Oblivion, Jade Empire and Deus Ex. I also like games where you can create your own campaign by making your own maps and putting them together in an overall campaign. Games like the Disciples and Neverwinter Nights series are good examples. You can play the built in campaigns which are great and/or you can design your own maps and write your own dialog, triggered events and backstory. That's what I like, games that really let you get into the storytelling aspect of the game either by letting you make custom senarios or at least by letting you make key decisions for your character that change the game later on.

Multiplayer is ok, especially if you know the guys you are playing with and they are not too rough on you. I hate the ones where everyone else is way better at the game than you are and never miss an opportunity to rub your face in it. I don't mind playing against uber players as long as they are good sports about it. I've had some great Battlefront matches with some guys who were practically experts at it but they didn't kick me off nor chew my butt for not being as good as they were. The guys on my side just asked me to be a sniper and cover them from the buildings. I got pretty good at that too and made several head shots.

I usually buy a game for the campaign. A good multiplayer dictates whether I'll still be playing it in a few months.
