Let's see just how many people won't read the OP and think I'm talking about a different version of camping...

We're talking about outdoors camping here. I'm using this thread for two means: the first is a temporary goodbye, as for the next week (until Saturday, July 2) I'll be camping. Second, to ask people's opinions on camping.

This'll be my third year in a row going, and I certainly don't mind it. It has its ups and downs, but doesn't everything? I usually go camping every other month with my Boy Scout troop, but I always go to this summer camp.

So, what are your opinions?

I actually assumed you meant outdoor camping when I read the title. Gamer fail?

I've only ever slept in a tent one night during a music festival, so I went for "I haven't gone camping" since that doesn't properly count. As for why not, I once summed it up for a friend who camps every summer:"Humanity spent millenia developing the science and technology necessary so I have a safe home to live in and don't have to shit in the forest or sleep on dirt. Why on earth would I?"

Before people respond, I do know the arguments given for camping. They just don't appeal to me. The only nature I like is frozen and camping in the middle of winter is a terrible idea.

I really don't like it.

"Ooh, let's sleep in a small tent on poor mattresses, (or none at all), eating bad food and not showering for large portions of time. And let's do this with multiple people. And let's pray that it doesn't rain because then the entire point of being outdoors is ruined."

Sorry, just not for me. And I've been dragged along on many camping trips before.

Well, since I´m a avid festival goer, camping usally goes hand in hand.
Along with many other things.^^

Been a while since i could do it, but back when i was younger used to go on road trips with camping. Few friends, few tents, plenty of nature around and plenty of booze bought on the way. Most fun was camping near my country borders and occasionally getting pestered by the guards that didn't want to let us pass the green border.

Crazy stuff, but yeah, as i got older i got more lazy as well, plus i can actually afford a place to sleep.

Every music festival is a camping trip for us, sleeping in a tent is fine, grilling is fine, music is fine, new people are fine. I like it a lot.

I enjoy it.

I was formerly a Boy Scout before I quit for several reasons, but I went to every camp out, even the "Freeze-out" one.

I have put "It depends on who I'm camping with" but what would be a better option is "It depends on what I'm camping for". I've been camping with my family quite a few times, and it's all been quite fun and relaxing (except for the time it turned out my tent wasn't waterproof).

However I'm also in the process of completing the Duke of Edinburgh gold award, which means I have to slog up and down hills and mountains from about 5 in the morning until 6 or 7-ish at night (if we make it on time), with all the food, clothes, shelter etc I'm going to need for 5 days on my back. I'm quite small so the backpack weighed nearly as much as me, and was almost as big as me too. In my group of 4, most of the conversations as we walked were about how horrifically bad this journey was, blisters, and me lying about how close we were to the end in order to stop everyone committing suicide (I was the only one with the energy to look at the map).

I certainly wouldn't call that "fun", although it does give a very satisfying feeling when you finish it. I've still got 2 more trips to do.

Well, when I go camping I go with my Cadet group as I actually don't own a tent. I've been three times this year, and each time is (I'd hope) quite different to how most people do it.

The last one I went to (In Feb.) we spent two days on Exercise, arriving at like 9:30 and running stag (guards) through out the night. Then we marched 5K to our new camp (the old one was 100m from the RAF red force. We spent the day jamming in that camp alternating between doing sod all and rescuing adult instructors from the red force. In the evening we ambushed the RAF before retiring to run Stag all night. Next day we launched an assault ont eh RAF before getting back.

I guess the main difference between this camping and most is that on this one veeryone had a full-auto capable rifle.

I like camping, but because of my bad back I just can't do it. Which is a shame, because I really like the outdoors. And to everyone who read the words 'bad back' and are assuming I'm old, I'll be 23 in three weeks. Genetics are a *****.

It's fun but I rarely get the chance to do it properly. Life is just too busy especially now that I've moved from a town of 50 000 people to a city of 1.6 million :/

Depends on the situation, sitting in a campsite with your parents is boring as shit, but going of to the wilderness with a few friends, setting up camp and having a few beers is great

I like it when it's more in a survival context. What I freaking hate are mobile homes, I just can't understand how that could possibly be worth it or otherwise even the slightest amount of fun.

We have a programme in the UK (and across all our commonwealths and stuff) called the Duke Of Edinburgh Awards, basically you have to complete several months of community and self-improvement tasks, and then you go on a hiking/camping trip for a few days with about half a dozen other people doing the Awards. We did them in School and the hikes were brilliant fun, they were hard but the fun you had when you set up your tents in the evening was unparralled. Asides from that I've never been camping, The school provided most of our gear and hardware.
