Pretty simple question: Can a bad ending ruin the game?

Borderlands Spoiler:

I'm not really talking about replay value, I mean can an ending make you wish you never played the story campaign? All the games I have played have never pissed me off enough to wish I had never played the game, but Borderlands came damn close to it. You work you way towards a goal to open a vault said to be full of money weapons etc. but when you open it you fight a giant squid boss that I found embarrassing easy, that dropped a useless weapon. I thought to myself that I don't need anything good from a final boss aslong as what to comes next makes up for it. There was nothing but a small xp bonus!

If you believe a bad ending can ruin a game, please include an example.

Getting all those false endings in Bubble Bobble sucked but I guess they made me come back for more to get the real one.

The new prince of persia ending was really quite bad, but I wouldent say it ruined the game. Meerly left a feeling of light anger. I mean what the bloody hell was up with that? You have a really shitty boss fight only to be forced into the stupidest endgame sequence I have ever seen.

Still the game was fairly fun, if a little repetitive.

If the rest of the game was fun, then the last 5 minutes being bad doesn't cancel out all the fun you had. It can leave you feeling disappointed, unfulfilled; maybe cheated by the developers, but anyone who says something like that can ruin an entire game is being just dramatic.

It's like those people that get annoyed when there is a movie made out of a video game and the movie turns out to be crap (unsurprisingly) and then they go on about how it ruined the video game. They are completely separate things and it doesn't ruin the enjoyment you had or could still have playing through the game again.

And PLEASE, spoiler warning in the future, I'm playing through Borderlands at the moment and now I know the ending... O_O
Absolutely. I'm going to get merced here but MGS4...
I'm down with the 90 minute bit at the end with Naked Snake, who was my favoruite character. But when it became apparent that Screaming Mantis was the last proper boss I was like "WHATTTTTTT *****?!" I was expecting some big complex explosive superbattle with Liquid, and in the end we get a fisticuffs mini-game.
I actaully thought that that was quite fun. You are fighting in an epic locayion and you get to kick his ass. It would have sucked if you had to shoot him a couple hundred times like all the other bosses, those were fun and all, but still.

Hood: "Master Chief? Would you mind telling me what you're doing on that ship?"
Chief: "Sir; Finishing this fight."

It is a bad ending but for me, what makes up for it is

[spoiler/]How ClapTrap becomes a NINJA ASSASSIN!
i think the thing about borderlands is that that portal would never have opened without you to collect all the peices so it would of been easier for that woman to just never interact so it never happens, or just kill you, problem solved.

haze ending was bad but so was most of the game.
also timeshift

Not for me, I can see why it ruins the game for some people, but I just judge the game on weather or not it's fun.

It depends, really. A bad ending won't ruin a game with good gameplay, because I'll play the game again merely for the gameplay. But a bad ending WILL ruin a game that is dependant on its story, because the whole thing would be leading up to a pile of crap.
