Poll: Can a bad ending ruin the game? *Spoilers*

MGS2. It was pretty bad anyway, but I think it could have got away with it had it had a good or even passable ending.

I got the same feeling with MGS 4 ending

Knowing that the inevitable and inevitably lame final showdown between my character and Mr Plasmids-Up-The-Arse in Bioshock makes me hesitate playing through it again. The previous level's shooting gallery isn't much cop either.

If the rest of the game was fun, then the last 5 minutes being bad doesn't cancel out all the fun you had. It can leave you feeling disappointed, unfulfilled; maybe cheated by the developers, but anyone who says something like that can ruin an entire game is being just dramatic.

You have to play through the 20 or whatever-it-is hours to get to the end. You're gonna tell me that the end retroactively ruined all the fun you had during those 20ish hours?

Gameplay > Story in an interactive media like games. A bad ending slays the story, not the game. You'll probably just skip over and through the story and do all the awesome stuff you can. Bad gameplay makes people not even continue on to experience the whole story. >_>

Needless to say, I don't think it can. It's just people feeling pissy/cheated over it and throwing all the fun they had with it into the bin.

Well i felt cheated while playing fable 2 strangely (spoiler)i mean i wanted some awesome showdown with the big boss badass that created the spire instead u fight a massive shard which is pretty repetitive and then you kill the guy with one bullet wow i was quite annoyed. but didnt stop me playing it again... and again.

Fallout 3 didnt annoy me realy i quite liked the ending a little predictable but (shrug) was ok

the ending of a game doesnt make me not play it again but it does make the journey a little marred the next time but if a games awesome with a crap ending its still a awesome game

I liked the ending for MGS2, the swordfight was fun and the patriots conspiracy wasn't that silly, I mean, reusing a dead villain because he was popular is pretty weak, but it could've been done a lot worse.

I wouldn't avoid assasins creed 2 for the story, while I'm seemingly the only person who liked the original on face value I will concede that the ending, or rather complete lack of was a something of a disapointment, the second ends with a bit of closure (and something happens).

I loved the swordfight as well - great echo of the fist fight on Rex, and Gray Fox v. Snake before that, but I more meant the whole 'S3' bullshit and the random weird VR Ray fighting bullshit.
I liked AssCreed 1 on face value as well. I thought it was a really fun game with plenty of shit to do and enjoy, as well as looking really pretty. I definitely won't avoid the sequel - just waiting for the PC version, and while the ending does seem to make something happen (the first definitely misses this) it also appears to be annoying and bullshit. I suspect it will kill my suspension of disbelief.

Yeah, I won't say that the ending to the second is particularly fantastic, it isn't. It leaves an opening for an obvious sequal (surprise, surprise). But it at least it gives a little closure, at least to the events immediately before the protagonist when it ends, there's no feeling of "why did this choose this mundane moment to end the game?".

Fallout 3. I want to play that game again, but the ending ruined it so much that everytime I look at the box I get the urge to clean my room, or do the laundry, just anything other than play it.

It affects replay value, but doesn't necessarily ruin the game. I mean, if you know the ending is bad, it will discourage you from playing the game again and finishing it, but if you wish you'd never played the game then chances are you weren't having as much fun with the game as you thought you were to begin with, and the only thing keeping you going was the hope of a good ending.
