No, but fans can make me not assosciate with a fandom of a series but if I don't like the people who are fans of the series I can always just enjoy it alone. Like Mass Effect for example. I like it. Don't really like the controversy over it but that doesn't stop me from liking the series.

If it has online multiplayer, the Super Smash Bros fandom makes me not want to play online in the next game. Does that count? I'd still get the game, I just wouldn't play online because fuck those elitist assholes.

Although they've all been mentioned, I'll offer my two cents. Fan bases are why I don't talk about/play Mass Effect, League of Legends, any other MOBA, or Starcraft, why I will never watch anything related to My Little Pony, and why I rarely go to any concerts for indie bands.

Suppose a bunch of dumbass racists like Batman Arkham Asylum. Me and them have that in common as I do too. You know what we don't have in common? Being dumbass racists. It's as simple as that really.

I do believe a fanbase can ruin your experience purely because if you dive into the fanbase yourself and the fanbase in turn ruins what you like to you then it's just them being negative right off the bat and of course that won't settle well since most fanbases usually come with their own set of "purists" who will go well out of their way to smash others for their pointless cause.

Oh and for those that go "just ignore them" then you are just letting the negative cancer spread.

Kind of. I'm a big Final Fantasy fan. I don't think I need to say any more.
I definitely haven't been turned away from it by 'them', but I can't help but cringe when I tell people I like it.

Heh. If a fanbase could make me lose interest in a series, I wouldn't be able to enjoy resident evil.

No, of course not. If I can enjoy it alone I'm not going to let other peoples opinions keep me from enjoying myself.
If anyone judges me in a negative way based off of generalizations then that is their problem and their loss, not mine.
Even if something I enjoyed had the absolute worst fandom in existence, I am confident enough in myself to live my life the way I want to live it.

If it is something that REQUIRES interaction with other people though, such as LoL or some other online game, then yes players behavior can affect my enjoyment of the game. Their behavior then becomes part the game's experience itself.

I liked playing the Scott Pilgrim game...but the fan base (particularly those of whom I lived with and now hate forevermore) drove me away. I only got back into it a few weeks ago, and have enjoyed the game and comics since.

Didn't like the movie though.

Conversely, Mass Effect 3's fans aggravated me to no end over the whole ending thing (which I liked), but it didn't deter me from loving the game anyway.

It's the fanboys of the Pokemon franchise that allowed Black and White to thrive which allowed them spawn a set of sequels.

Here's to January 8 and hope that the fanboys evolve with the series, and not for the worst.

I hit yes.

Anyone who stalks me on here knows I hate the FGC. And they are a fandom of fighting games. I refuse to play fighters because its fans throw a tantrum whenever someone announces they're new to the genre. And SRK and DL haven't and will never improve their attitude no matter how much they say they will.

Well, they can certainly make me want to avoid other fans at all costs, I tell you what...

But, if I liked something enough to become a fan in the first place, no amount of other people who like the same thing being jerks can change that. :p

I think a fandom can ruin my interest in a piece of media if the fans are loud and numerous enough to make the developers start changing things for the worse. Like, for a vague example, there is a series of some sorts about a small group of people with several main characters, one of whom is very popular with the fan base but I'm not particularily crazy about. If the creators of said team see how popular that character is and make the series almost exclusively about said character, that would make me lose interest completely. Or if a particular element of a story, like a romantic subplot or a fighting style or something, becomes popular and then the creators decided to axe everything else that I liked about the story to make room for that element, it's the same thing.

So yeah, I think a fanbase can definitely make me dislike a franchise I have interest in, and they can certainly turn me off from trying to get into a new franchise as well.

I don't get it

Why would you be put off by a singleplayer game from how others feel about it?

Thankfully, the fans of the things I like seem to be relatively level-headed people, so I've not encountered this problem yet. Unless of course I'm just as mental as the others, in which case, wa-hey!

Bad fandom can prevent me from starting to like something though, and has happened on numerous occasions.
