I'm pretty sure Sega Saturn was not better than Genesis.
Going to have to agree there. I'm not sure why the Saturn sticks out as worse in my mind, but I certainly have more love for the Genesis and all the fun it brought my buddies and I during the 90's. Good times.

Uh... You might of just started one.

Seriously though, I prefer the ps2 to the ps3 because of games, not hardware. That said, a lot of people don't like current gen consoles because they are temperamental beasties, less focused on running games without crashing and more like... well PC's.

So yes, it's valid to say a console is better than it's precursor, simply because there are some drawbacks, and some people value the drawbacks higher than others.

Besides, some people miss the days of blowing into cartridges to get them to work. Admit it, you nostalgiad when I mentioned that.

I would never say the Xbox was better than the Xbox 360. The only thing keeping that thing alive was Halo. The Xbox 360 is much better in very way. Better visuals, you can play DVDs on it, better third party support.

I WOULD say that the Wii is worse than the Gamecube simply because I am a controller person and most of the games on the Wii are shitty 3rd party games from Cabella's. The Gamecube's game catalog was not much better, but it had some good mature titles at least.

I would also say that the PS2 is better than the PS3 once again on the view of games and third party support. Like Yahtzee said, the PS2 had a ridiculous amount of games that were classics, most of which came from third parties. The Blu-Ray is nice, but the PS3 does not feel like an improvement to me.

OT:Well PS3 is better than PS1 and 2 because of its backwards compatability
That was a joke, right? I bought RE4 for the PS2 thinking I could play it on my PS3 (I've never owned a PS so I wanted to start catching up on games I missed) only to be told that my console didn't support BC. Bastards!
OT: I definitely agree with Gamecube>Wii
EDIT: Whoops, tagged the wrong person. Shit
EDIT 2: There we go

I think the Wii was an improvement over the GameCube, as there's nothing the GC does that the Wii doesn't (to my knowledge). That said, I'd also prefer a GameCube because it sells for $15 (because there's no reason to keep it if you have a Wii, and everyone who had a GameCube bought a Wii)
That's not true. I never bought a Wii and I still have my Gamecube. I felt there was no need to waste my money when I had a perfectly good platform to get my Nintendo fix. Until recently I think it was the other way around. There was no real reason to buy a Wii if you had a Gamecube. Unless of course for some reason you wanted the motion controls, but that's just talking crazy. :D

I agree with everyone that said Nintendo's consoles have gone downhill since the N64, especially considering the N64 is probably my favorite console of all time. Anyway, my point is that as long as I was able to get the games I wanted for Gamecube (See Zelda) I had no reason to get a Wii. I think my time of not owning a Wii is going to come to an end soon though as Skyward Sword will only release for the Wii. :(

As for the other consoles, I'm mostly pleased with the progression, but I feel they asked too much for the PS3 so I'd say I'd prefer the PS2. Now, idk. I'd have to get a PS3 now to give a proper comparison.

Honestly though, I've been a bit turned off by console gaming anymore as I have a PC that fills most of my gaming needs. Maybe that says something about the current state of console gaming, or maybe it just says something about PCs, I can't really say for sure, but it's probably unrelated. Still, thought I'd put it out there.

Yes, but it's always a matter of opinion. I think the Playstation 2 was stronger than the Playstation 3. On the same note, I think the SNES is better than the NES. This is all a matter of opinion, and for me the consoles are only as good as the games on it. Processing power doesn't do shit for me

Hardware wise, I guess you could say that certain design decisions do sometimes seem backwards (like how the original Xbox could be dropped off a cliff and still run while the 360 can break if you look at it wrong). Overall though, just on the pure technology alone, I'm not sure that's the case. One generation is going to be more powerful than the last, otherwise there wouldn't be a new generation at all.

Game wise? Absolutely. I don't think it's a stretch at all to say, for example, the Genesis was better than the Saturn or (my personal belief) that Nintendo has been on a downward slide since the end of the SNES era. It's all opinions though and not really something that could be proven.
Nintendo has always been on a downward slide. They were steadily dropping marketshare each generation. As well as the NES sold, SNES sales were down. N64 sales were down from there and GameCube even further down. Interesting thing is the NES came in with a complete vacuum, and rebuilt the market in its own image. The Wii had a rather similar situation, with the PS3 being too expensive and the 360 failure prone, so they practically had no competition. They've only managed to really beat and squish out all the competition in the handheld arena, the way Sony did with the PS1 and PS2.

There is the fact that a bunch of games skipped Nintendo generations. Certain games on the N64 didn't reappear until the Wii, so if you want a complete set of Nintendo's stable then the Wii is the way to go. Particularly with NSMB Wii (although it's a total pain to play with Motion Plus... Wii controls totally remind me of the N64 with all the shuffling around to get the controls to work).

Well, it's the games that make the system. Not the system itself. I often find myself playing more PS2 games on my PS3 than actual PS3 games. Not to say that the current generation doesn't have good games, but it doesn't have as many great games as previous generations IMO.

That is true about some games skipping, but I was merely commenting on the fact that you said everyone that had Gamecube bought a Wii. It was merely to say you shouldn't make a generalization like that. It was mostly just me saying well I didn't and I'm sure there were others as well. Now that's not to say I didn't think about buying a Wii, but for me, I only had enough for one new console and I decided on the 360. I might have gotten the PS3, but it was just too expensive. On another note, I didn't really have all that many games for my Gamecube in the first place and those I did have I didn't play all too often. I felt like the games were going downhill, and I just lost interest I guess. Like you said though, to get some of the games I'll have to get a Wii, which is why I said when Skyward Sword hits, you'll probably be able to add one more person to the list of Wii owners. :D

The PS2 is better than the PS3. Lack of HD and shiny graphics yes, some of the best games ever made, major yes.

I dunno, it's a sticky topic. There are definitely things which are better on the PS2 over the PS3, like the library of games is epic, probably second only to the PC itself, plus some of the best games of the decade are on the PS2.

Though on the other hand, some of the other best games of the decade are on the PS3, plus I have free online, internet acess, ABC Iview, PlayTV, amazing graphics and a music player all rolled into one.

I reckon that all in all, this generation is better than the last. The PS3 has incredible capabilities over it's little brother and the 360s controller is excellent compared to that massive glob of plastic they called an Xbox 1 controller.

N64 > WII

that is all.

EDIT: well, i suppose its really just the games that suck me into the N64, not the actual console itself.

O RLY? (Sorry couldn't help myself)

Except for the fact that the price dropped (aka even remotely affordable) PS3's are not backwards compatible.

That's why I still own a PS2.

Fine, not everyone with a GameCube bought a Wii, but I haven't met a single person in person who has a GameCube who now doesn't also have a Wii. There's hardly anyone who didn't upgrade.
