That isn't exactly what I was saying...and assisted suicide is a little bit of a different topic.
Actually, I don't think it is. A choice to end your life is the same whether or not you get someone else to do it. Suicide by cops, suicide by doctor, suicide by friend, whatever you add to the term, it's still the conscious decision to end your life. I'd say that a large majority of suicides are rational. The ones that aren't thought out end badly, and not in any final way. We all know the stories. A guy tries to eat his shotgun and just ends up with his face missing. Guy chugs drain cleaner. Those aren't rational, and they don't end in death (although it'd be a mercy for them to die after that), and boy oh boy do they fail. You know what they say, fail to plan, plan to fail.
Now my personal favorite argument against suicide is that it's a selfish act. Of course, those who say that are also being selfish, because they're putting their need to have the person who wants to die in their life above the pain of the person.
Perhaps one's stance on suicide also depends on their view of death and how they handle it. Of course, suicide tends to be far more traumatic than other kinds of death, especially when it's in your family, and it wasn't because of a terminal illness. People can feel like they're to blame. Sometimes they are, sometimes they aren't. But in the end, death is death, so if you view it as an eventuality, or a part of life, then it can get easier to deal with. Granted, not having someone there will always hurt, but it's not as different from other deaths. You'll miss your friend the same whether they got shot by someone else or did it themselves.
Yeah, there is a finality to suicide that might make us think that it isn't rational, but frankly, saying that you can just get a fresh start and give it another go ISN'T rational. No one gets a truly fresh start, and you can't really escape your problems. You can end them, however.
So if you go over it with friends and family, and really think about it, if you really, truly hurt to the point where just being alive is exhausting to you, then go for it.
