Earth to captain moron here, that game was fucking excellent! I would prefer it if you didn't insult the greatest contribution to gaming of our generation.
I was quite partial to some Power Rangers and Carmageddon on my N64.

Superman can't make a good game character because the gameplay wouldn't change throughout the game. He'd have all his abilities at the beginning and, as someone who can go any place on the planet any time he wants, it would be easy to make the game feel small or confined. Still, there must be someone with good ideas for old Soupy to feature in a decent game.
You could start the game as a child and work your way up. Superman couldn't fly until a lot later in life and his strength grew as he did. You could have a game about his early life ending with him a super powered god.
So Smallville: The Game?
Well...less Hollyoaks with capes but yeah.

It's Superman. It has ALOT of potential.

Lets take Spiderman 2: The Movie, The Game. (The novel, based on true events.)

It was a great game. Replace the web slinging with flying and you're halfway there.

The problem is that Superman is so powerful that in an open world game especially what the game can't let you do becomes more apparent. Why can't I smash though walls? Why can't I fly to china? Why can't I fly around the world backwards and turn back time? (aside from the fact that it's stupid and never made sense)

Essentially the only way you can make this game is by making it that he loses when innocents die. That way you can fight random goons but it becomes a challenge because civillians are in harms way.

If you're not doing it like that, he'd have to fight, what...3 people? The Flash, Green Lantern and Doomsday? And I guess Spectre and Wonder Woman but that's it. It'd be a half an hour game on XBLA and cost £10.

Or make it an RPG. Make the story interesting and have him deal with hiding his identity.

Its near impossible unless they make up some plot to weaken him. There is no challenge in the games because Superman himself can't die (unless your enemies get krytonite armor or something) and he is stronger than everybody else. Batman is human he can get shot up so he has to focus on stealth for the majority of his crime fighting, and Spiderman is alsonot invulnerable to everything so he has to rely on his agility to protect himself. Superman is too overpowered to make a challenging game without fucking with the story.

I think the primary problem with superman is the setting. There are very few people on the DC earth who would pose a threat. I mean there might be Specter, Manchester Black, Black Adam (maybe) and that dude with the ability to both copy powers and increase them (Paradigm? Paragon? I forget his name, but he was a villain but helped superman fight the giant daxamite robot thing) but for the most part most of the enemies superman is a match for are not on earth.

Now, if they did a game in outer space, or with lots of alien enemies, THAT might have potential. Perhaps if they made a game based on the Miniseries "invasion" where a whole bunch of different alien races team up to take Earth down, we might have an exiting game.

Still, I think there are plenty of DC universe characters who would lend themselves better to a video game than superman. Admittedly, most aren't exactly top tier, but I would love to see games based around characters such as Green Arrow, Flash, the JSA, Blue Beetle (either Ted Kord or Jamie Reyes), maybe even Booster Gold.

i think if they did an interactive story of supermans life, kind of like a combination of half life storytelling, dynasty warriors type gameplay, maybe mixed in with some fable environment interaction/openworldedness. i think that'd be a kickass superman game.

I would have to beg to differ; the 90's animated series pitted Supes against some pretty powerful enemies, not the least of which being Metallo, Brainiac and Darkseid, so his super-ness isn't really an issue. Shoot, even Lex Luthor, a normal human, can and has been an imposing villain and Superman's arch-nemesis.

Gameplay... I think it'd work best as a beat-em-up, but instead of combos and special weapons (heat-vision, ice breath and the like are present at the start) you instead combat insane numbers of mooks. Brainiac and Darkseid have zillions of those.

Story might sound like it'd be sparse at best, but I think there's a potential for some drama. NO clue where this drama is, but it's in there somewhere...

Bottom line: YES, there could be a good Superman game. IS it going to be made anytime soon? Nnnnnnnno, I wouldn't think so. On the other hand, Duke Nukem Forever is on its way; perhaps Hell will completely freeze over one day, and the Man of Steel will get a game worthy of his splendor.

Actually it'd be like being "allergice" to radioactive dirt...since it's radioactive kryptonian rock.

Fuck possibilities! I DON'T WANT THERE TO BE A GOOD SUPERMAN GAME! He is the most OVER-HYPED, OVER-RATED, OVER-POWERED douche bag in comic book history. He's an illegal alien taking jobs away from honest, hard working, MORTAL American heroes.

the main problem i see to a superman game is that he is indestructable.
If you have ever used a cheat in a game to get god mode then for a while you get excited as you can now defeat the iritatingly impossible to kill boss or baddies but after about 5 minutes you are in hell, walking up to them and mele killing them while thinking about what is on the telly. After 10 minutes you either can not play the game anymore or you set him back to vulnerable.

And that leaves a superman in a paradox, either it remains true to the comic, and you cannot lose. or they make it a challenge to play and anyone who even has the slightest inklingof supermans powers gets annoyed and calls you a tosser for making a superman who ca die and therefore is not the real superman

Well I know they're planning to do a reboot movie in the next few years so superman hype will be high down the line, especially if it's actually any good. They may just pump out a crappy tie in game OR they could do what rocksteady did and use the dark knights hype to create a game with that character without it actually tieing in to the story. If it's happening it won't be next year, or maybe even the one after that, but it could come.

There could be something else at stake other than your life. There are a couple of examples of games now where you can't die now-a-days like Fable 2 and 3, even examples with it's still being a challenge despite it.

It would not work.

Why? Because for one thing, flying has never been handled very well within games least off flying faster than a speeding bullit.

But most of all, every game needs restrictions inorder too create challenge. Superman is restricted by nothing.

Superman returns had surprisingly good flight mechanics. Download the demo, seriously, it's quite fun. Combat is shit though.

I would say you could do it, it's just that noone ever will.
