Story, story+characters and... the "cool factor", is that it?

Alpha Protocol is a buggy mess, but it's a buggy mess I hold dear to myself because of the story.

Why, Jim Sterling? WHY?!

Dragonage Origins, bad graphics, bad combat and has one of the WORST levels in gaming history (if you've played it you know what i'm talking about) but hey its a Bioware game so the story and characters is always going to be worth it...

Also Alpha Protocol... Every boss battle is either frustatingly unfair to borderline unwinnable or stupidly easy depending on what skill set you have. Hell i killed the final boss from across the room in 2 seconds with a pistol but the story is fucking awesome and the capicity for badassery outweighs even Mass Effect 2 and Dead Rising combined.

Forgot to stay on topic in my previous reply, guess I was too focused on the negative.

I recently played through Might and Magic IX for the 3rd or so time despite it being severely dated, unfinished due to the company tanking, and several incompatibilities with windows vista, having to alt tab at every load screen or suffer freezing. And I pretty much did it all because I wanted a play through with Assassin, Gladiator, Paladin and Mage. Seeing the Assassin one shot pretty much anything is quite a motivator. so essentially I had a ton of fun playing a very broken game.

All of the above. If some part is particularly good, I can deal with the rest being awful.

Arcanum? Buggy. So buggy. Astonishingly unbalanced, too, even post-patch. But that's okay, since the gameplay's good fun and the story is incredible.

Likewise for Terranigma. Borked system in a few regards, rather poor gameplay, amazing story. Both are some of my favourite games.

I can usually look over lack-luster gameplay and graphics if the games story or characterization (or both) is great or interesting. I am currently playing and enjoying Deadly Premonation, an X-Box 360 game that looks like a mediocre PS2 game and plays just as well, but has a fascinating, unique story with great characters.

P.S. I am not kidding about those graphics. I swear, even Silent Hill 2 had better graphics that this game.

EDIT: Ah crap, ninja'd in my mentioning of Deadly Premonition. I really did ever suspect that someone else would mention the game...

Atmosphere is the word here. It made metro 2033 my GOTY, even if the gameplay was pretty generic. Story comes second, but then good games tell a story trough its atmosphere.

The only glaring fault i'm willing to accept is a terrible story that comes with a skip option so that I don't actually have to listen to any of it if I don't want to.

The horrible horrible bugs in Fallout New Vegas was like putting my balls in a vice but for some reason Im still playing it. I cant figure out why. It must be its addicting nature or something.

I can overlook Final Fantasy XIII's abuse of pallete swapped enemies because of the story, characters, and gameplay system.

Sure. The Longest Journey as a point & click adventure game is at best mediocre really. The puzzles are either too easy, pixel hunts, or the worst sort of frustrating 'logic'.

And yet it's easily one of my favourite games of all time, probably even in my top 10 were I to try and list every game I've ever played, because the characters, the story, and the way in which everything interacts is just so very, very good it puts TLJ above most everything else!

I've also got a high bug-tolerance and a fair bit of patience, which helps with buggy games as well.

Not just story either, the opposite works as well. I'm more than happy to put up with a shit story and lame characters if the game is just ridiculously fun! All sorts of reasons to love a game.

Story, characters, atmosphere, and gameplay all apply to an extent. Some faults can't be forgiven. Others can. Occasional freezing in Mass Effect 2. Irritating but I'll be damned if that stops me from playing. Broken game that's so bad it's unplayable, doesn't matter how great the story is, I quit.

By the worst level do you mean....

When you have to go into the Fade and morph into all the different things? I'm not sure what level you mean if it's not that.
oh god yes...that was horrible I felt like I was going mad, only thing that I could consider worse is getting lost inside a vault in Fallout and wandering around aimlessley and it feels like my compass is against me
