Hello

I'm currently an American highschool student and recently I've begun considering at Canadian Colleges, specifically the University of Manitoba.

My question to you, is if any of you could tell me a bit about Manitoba. I just want to know a little about Winnipeg, Manitoba, and if you know anything, some information about the University of Manitoba.

Honestly, as a kid that's never been out of America, I just want to know a little more about Manitoba or a the surrounding provinces. Really, anything would be welcome.

Thanks for the help :)

I was led to believe there would be a poll here? :(

It's not as simple as "going to college in Canada," start thinking about applying for a student visa so you can actually go there.
Oh, I know. I'm just trying to get a better picture of Canada in my head, what it's like, what's different, what pretty much the same.

Winnipeg has one of the highest crime rates in Canada and was recently dubbed "Murder Central". A few years ago the city or something like that tried to make a guy stop selling t-shirts telling tourists that Winnipeg is the murder capital of Canada, the courts sides with the t-shirt guy because Winnipeg had the highest murder rate at the time.

I can't say anything about the place itself other than that though, never been there. Have you considered moving to British Columbia, really beautiful place to live.
Oh, my. That's good to know. A little terrifying, but good to know. I'll have to look into the rather large safety compromise. Thank you very much for mentioning that.

With a student visa you do need to pay all the tuition fees that are normally covered by our taxes (in other words College will be expensive for you (an immigrant). The rest of your questions are better answered by those who live in the areas your looking at.

To be fair, 'Murder capital of Canada' is a bit like 'Most dangerous cuddly teddy bear'.

I kid, Canada has it's crime like every country.

Well, while I don't live in Winnipeg any longer, I did spend my most of my life there so I can probably answer most specific questions you have about the city.

As has been said Winnipeg is known a lot for it's crime rate, both in terms of smaller crimes but also in terms of larger more violent ones. The good thing, if you want to call it that, is that most of the trouble is linked to the central area of the city including it's downtown but also several neighbourhoods at it's periphery. If you stay out of these areas, particularly at night, it's really not that bad at all. During the daytime in downtown the most you're likely to deal with unless you make yourself an obvious target is aggressive panhandling.

Other than the crime rate, the city is not a bad place. Manitoba and the neighbouring province of Saskatchewan have done much better in economic situation of the past few years than other parts of Canada and have actually grown in affluence over that time. Weather is a case of extremes with summer being extremely hot and winter being very cold. If you like sports, Winnipeg has professional teams in hockey, football and baseball, though only the hockey team plays in the most recognized professional league for their sport. Overall, Winnipeg is not a bad place. It wouldn't be my first choice of places to go but, and especually if your main goal is an education, you could do much worse.

I hope no Manitoban Escapists take this the wrong way but you can do a lot better than Winnipeg for a college education and a place to live in Canada.

It all depends on what you're looking for really. What kind of degree are you looking to take? What exactly are you looking for in a place to live (culture, history, vibrant nightlife etc)? What's your financial situation like? Canada has a lot to offer, I would just recommend other provinces and cities over what you're considering.
