I've been thinking about which game I should play next. Sadly my wallet is getting lighter by the day, so I thought I'd buy a cheaper game that I've wanted to play for a while. Problem is: I can't decide which! So please aid me in this honorable quest to find which game I should buy. Jade Empire or Rise of the Argonauts?

None of them have demos so haven't had a chance to play them. Rise of the Argonauts suffers from some bugs (according to reviews), but has a great storyline (again, according to reviews). But so does Jade Empire! However, it is an older game, and I believe the fighting mechanic is dreadfully simple (simplicity + PC gaming = Yuck!). Oh, I forgot to mention, they're both for PC.

Jade Empire was excellent and the fighting mechanics can't exactly be described as 'simple'. Support techniques, multiple close combat options with different specialities, some enemies can only be wounded by weapons etc etc.

Never tried Argonauts though.

I have heard nothing outstanding about Argonauts. Reviews ranging from an average time passer, to an absolute disaster.

Jade Empire is older, but an amazingly well crafted game with a huge following demanding a sequel (despite being designed to stand alone). There is a reason why it's seen both PC translations and also appeared on things like XBL as a "classic" for paid DL.

I'd be very surprised if you'd see anyone recommend Argonauts over Jade Empire.

When in doubt, always go with BioWare.
If I didn't think "/thread" was kind of obnoxious, that's what I would say here. This was BioWare's first try at action-RPG and it's quite good. For a first attempt, it's amazingly good. It's got a very distinctive visual design, the voice acting is good (standard for BioWare) and it's got a classic BioWare story. I will also say that the inventory management in the game is excellent. I spent waaaaaaay to much time managing my gear and upgrades in KOTOR.
