A decent amount of what makes Dark Souls popular is that the controls and type of difficulty are casual-safe. You're completely fine moving and doing one single action most of the time. It highly punishes for mistakes, but most of the game is heavily scripted and easily learned with a guide.
While something like Platinum Games titles and Ninja Gaiden (3D trilogy) will only congratulate you if you get good at them. Though this is assuming you're playing at least hard mode on the latter, Metal Gear Rising is way too easy on normal.
For more simple games, its the equal of getting past 30 pipes in Flappy Bird vs beating Battletoads' scrolling levels.
Both take a good amount of effort, but the former immediately praises the person playing as you inch towards your goal, defeat is meaningless, and it never demands you pay attention.
The latter reminds you failed every step of the way and changes things up constantly.
You can't just get lucky.
You can't just force those things on casual players since they'll either quit or be unsatisfied.
