What really gets on my nerves, is how everyone is talking about casual games as if they were some huge new thing that everyone should get into, because it's the only safe monetary future for games. No it isn't. They are flash games. Flash games that they make you pay for. There really aren't that many differences between the most popular ones anyways, compared to flash games that have been out for years, are popular, and STILL FREE.

Casual games are flash games wrapped in a skinner box wrapped in glitter and aluminum foil. They are made to look particularly shiny, even though they bring LITERALLY NOTHING to the table. As you can see, I really despise them on principle, what are your thoughts?

What are you referring to as "casual", iPhone games or social games? I don't care about the first that much, I really prefer my handhelds. As for social games, they are cute timesinks, and no, noone is forcing you to pay a dime to play them.

Ooh, a "lets hate on casual games!" thread. We have not had one of those for a while. Good gravy, I am so sick of this stuff...

OT: They might be something close to flash games you pay for, if you are only talking about iPhone apps. Not all "casual" games are iPhone apps. There are plenty "casual" games for the Wii that feature fully 3D graphics.

Added with yet another "Poll:" perspective. Like a thousand of them aren't enough as it is...

Flash games without all the sex, yes.

Sadly, the people who buy them would be bewildered by the prospect of using a computer to go online to find a site and shift through many big and confusing names in a search for a fun game...and apparently they're far more than us.

Depends entirely on the game you're referring to. Angry Birds might basically be a flash game but it's packed with content and well designed. Why shouldn't they get money for that, even if it's just $0.99 per person?

For a game to be a flash game it has to be made in flash / written in ActionScript.
What about Plants vs. Zombies? It's a casual game, made with direct X.

Hell, call of duty is basically a casual game if your definition is pick up and play mechanics.

I've allways been calling Angry birds a flash game clone.
I don't remember the name of the game it cloned but it is also very similar to say, castle crushers/crashers.

The game you're thinking of was called crush the castle. And yeah, angry birds ripped them off huge. It's one of the reasons I dislike Rovio.

Only the most hardcore of PC gamers only play flash games. And why you might ask?, because the havent been ported to consoles. Also they only play S.T.A.L.K.E.R.

What annoys me the most is when I see flash games with good concepts, and a few weeks later, the SAME exact ideas turn up as iPhone apps and some unrelated company makes a ton of money.

Yeah, pretty much. For every casual game, there's a dozen and a half free flash games that are nearly identical. Which is not to say that either is necessarily bad, they just have a lot in common. Probably because virtually all flash games are played casually.
