If he could play an X-Men character, I'd be pleasantly surprised, because he didn't leave much of an impression in White House Down. I think they've already got somebody else lined up for it, though, haven't they? Doesn't make much sense to me to change actors if the one you've got at the moment works fine.

As for whether Tatum should be playing Gambit, I don't know. I'll reserve my judgement until I actually see him in the role.
I think Tatum *can* pull it off. How likely well it turns out is due to scripting and directing as well as his acting. Mind you I thought Kitsch did well despite the lackluster writing and directing of Origins, so it could go either way... 21 Jump Street was hilarious in-part because of Tatum and I've always believed good comedy is the hardest part of acting so I think its very possible.
Tatum is too hunky to play Gambit. I can see him as Iceman or Colossus. But you need someone more lithe to play Gambit. Tatum isn't exactly "graceful". He's more of an America-fuck-yeah type. Don't see him pulling a French accent.
To be honest, I don't really know who he is so can only trust in the casting people, who, it must said, have done a generally great job till now. Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellan are stellar, Hallie Berrie, Anna Pacquin and Hugh Jackman are brilliant and of course Ray Parks was bad arse. To be honest, I'm just incredibly excited about prospect of a Gambit movie and the details aren't registering. The coolest XMan, the suave, thieving, heroic, romantic Ragin' Cajun on the big screen...about bloody time is really all I can say.
The xmen (and spin offs) represent all I ever knew and enjoyed and loved back when I read comic books, and Gambit was always my favourite. I'll take this movie over the entire MCU any day. Luckily though, I don't have to

There really needs to be an "undecided" option, because I'm not really comfortable casting judgement on a casting choice before we've even seen a goddamn still-shot of him/her in costume.
I say good choice. I can't think of anybody that looks just like Gambit or is a perfect fit, so that whole train of thought will just go nowhere, IMO. Tatum can do Gambit. He can act like a rascal and be pretty funny. I can totally see it. The only question is whether he can play a cajun.
Undecided. I can't visualise him in the role and my impression from what little I've seen of him in parts of films have been that he's just some unremarkable beefcake, but perhaps if he loses the bulk, he can pull it off and surprise the audience.
It strikes me as neither a bad choice nor a deeply inspired one. Gambit is supposed to be the attractive rogue, like something off the cover of a cheesy romance novel. Tatum basically got famous playing those sort of roles. Granted he normally goes for a cleaner more straight laced character. As others have said he probably would have been better as Cyclops.
As long as things get hit with a Bo staff, he says "mon ami" and exploding playing cards get chucked around, I don't care. I want this movie in my life so badly. I'll take it in pretty much any form, along with any sequels, spin offs and appearances. I wonder what the chances are of getting Anna Pacquin to appear in it as a love interest in Rogue. I understand that their romance is soooo 90s/00s and they haven't been a *thing* for a while now in the comic books but I still think they're the loves of each other's lives, despite the on-off, power-control and numerous other issues.
On the topic at hand, I've never seen a movie with this actor in it so I have no basis for an opinion on his suitability. Google images shows a fairly generic looking hollywood actor, though the beauty of films is that it's more than just the actor. It's the costume, story, SFX, direction, script, etc. that adds up to a whole. I hope he can do it justice and like to think the casting people made a good choice since it's an important one. He has to pull of the cajun accent, the character and the action sequences....tall order.

I think he himself might be able to play Gambit, but he doesn't look anything like right for the part. He's not a bad actor, but his actual talents tend to be overlooked because people are too busy ogling him or the film doesn't really require it. He was fucking good in 21 Jump Street though, I was surprised at how good a comic actor he is.
I think it could go pretty well, as others have said he lacks the look a bit but that can be fixed with costumes, makeup etc.
As for the points people have made about him being able to nail the cajun accent, keep in mind he is from the deep south, albeit Alabama and not Louisiana, but being from that area I'd assume he's heard it throughout his formative years here and there, so add a bit of voice coaching to that and it shouldn't be a problem...Time will tell, but I'm hopeful.
