I usually try to make an original character that is really awesome or a ridiculous character when I am bored.

I usually try to make an amusing character, often taking the form of a wise-talking action hero, one you can think up ludicrous character traits for while playing.

It's all about immersion :p

Always the opposite sex because you can fantasize about them while playing the game instead of staring at yourself...gay

I make a female character for the first playthrough. If I wanted to playthrough another time, and if there are hot chicks in the game for me to digitally hit on (yay Bioware RPGs, you guys make me proud to be Canadian), then I'll make "me" for the second run through.

I'd make myself to an extent. I'd like to be me, while being a fantasy me. Does that make sense? Basically, all I'm gonna do is start with something that I think looks like me, then change up clothing a little, maybe height and slight change in build, and able to use a few weapons blah blah blah.
Yeah...

I try to make my likeness as much as possible. Unless I'm rolling a female character, then I make it look as far from me as possible.

In my single playthrough of Saints Row 2 I was...

1-Black Jesus the Blaxploitation pimp.
2-A scrawny mexican
3-A massive latin women wearing a pimp suit.
4-Xerxes
5-Nathan Explosion

And probably some others. I think I beat it as Xerxes though.
Note that Xerxes spelled backwards is sexrex as in SexRex, the King of Sex.

I tend to make myself and people I know.

Although for the adept in Mass Effect I created Alice, the chick from the Resident Evil movies. She has a very similar skill set.

In Saints Row 2 I managed to make a fairly accurate representation of myself but with short hair and a badass british accent in place of a boringass nuetral accent and mid-length hair.

But in any other game that lets you create your own character I just make up a character, as my face is too distinctive for anything less complex than Saints Row 2's creation feature.

I make a character who is usually the same race and gender as me, but looks completely different. They usually have a goatee, something I don't have.
My Mass Effect character somehow looked exactly like me, were I twenty years older, which I thought was pretty amazing.

I would create myself, but I'm usually so bad at the game starting off that it'd be depressing seeing myself get killed over and over again in increasingly horrible ways.

I usually create someone badass, and therefore completely different from actual me.

I guess you can say myself but only what I assume I'll look at age forty: Messy black hair, baggy eyes, needs to shave, that type of stuff. Also, if I can, glasses. I guess that's that Gordon Freeman in me. :D

Yeah, I create a badder version of myself ;)

I mean, you have to admit, what's better then playing a 100 ft, 1000lb tank version of yourself and walking on people.

I more create someone I aspire to be, in both origins, motivations, and appearances. Someone who I'd really want to be, but can't.

Usually in an RPG like this I'll make my first character myself, or at least an idealised version of myself. You know, basically me but as a badass instead of a pasty teenage student.

Any characters I make afterwards will be original, with their own personalties and backstories.

I choose my character's gender based on their voice actor, at least in games where your character is actually reasonably vocal. The better the voice, the better the characterisation. Also less likely to get on my nerves.
If the protagonist in question isn't actually voiced, usually a guy. However, if gender makes a difference to the story (like the KOTOR games) I'll likely play through with both genders at least once.

As for what they look like, a male character will usually be an idealised version of myself. A female character will generally just look like she's prepared to stylishly kick arse. And she'll usually be proportioned realistically, i.e. she won't have me worrying that her spine is going to break mid-game.

That said, I do have to admit some of the...er...interesting body types in Saints Row 2 are quite hilarious. At least until the novelty wears off.
