It's kinda sad that you need to cheat to have fun in videogames . As long as you don't cheat in multiplayer , go nuts . But when you're not having fun without cheating , i think theres a problem.

OT: i don't cheat . Ever . I play for challenge . Hell sometimes i don't use LEGIT things in games because i think they are overpowered and cheapen the game .

I prefer to play a game without cheating, though I have to admit sometimes going godmode and having unlimited ammo is fun... Never on a first or second run through though. I like to beat the game without the cheats, and to be honest, I prefer to reply without the cheats. Sometimes, though, I just want to splatter everything in sight and not worry about taking damage as I'm doing it.
I have never really understood the expression "beat the game". I don't play games for challenge, I play them to enjoy myself and relax, or get lost in another world or experience a gripping story.

I often don't use cheats because I find they break my immersion. If, however, I think that cheating will improve my experience I will not hesitate.

In my early days of gaming I did. I was so bad at playing them, I had to use cheats in games just to get through them.

These days, I still cheat a bit in games, but most games don't actually have cheats anymore. Also, I've gotten a lot better at gaming too.
Besides, in a lot of games now, easy mode kinda works like a cheat anyway.
I have recently started playing Spec Ops: The Line. I am playing it on the easiest mode because I am not here for the challenge, I am only interested in the experience. I am still finding myself stuck dying in the same place fairly frequently. I suspect this is mostly due to my general ineptitude with this kind of shooter. I find the controls obnoxiously presumptuous and unreliable and the camera positioning unhelpful and often sickening.

I expect if the camera kept my character centered and if the controls did what I wanted I would have a blast. Unfortunately they don't and I am stuck with an interesting story being told on the other side of a sticky bog.

Eh, I do both. Sometimes I like challenge so I play legit, other times I just want to goof around. It doesn't really depend on the game much as I can do either in the same game. And sometimes I actually cheat for more academic reasons - in Torchlight 2 I have a character that's only there so I can use console commands with him and investigate different aspects of the game. Or I would use Cheat Engine to try and pick apart a game just to see how easy or hard it is.

I also exploit games a lot. I'm usually trying to find some flaws in the game logic an use them to my advantage. It's quite interesting to go in depth and explore what makes a game tick. Sometimes it's not really "flaws" but some oversight, like one ability being mathematically superior than another even though they should both be equal.

What I can say is that there isn't one true way of enjoying games - challenge can be fun as well as ease or a mix of these. Well, as long as you're not impacting another's game (so, in multiplayer, perhaps) it doesn't really matter how you do it.

Really depends on the game and such. I'll usually run a Legit save and a Cheat save alongside each other in city/world-builder games. Same with Minecraft, the whole survival aspect is fun, but sometimes I like just using an inventory editor and running amok, building something HUGE. Like a castle, with functioning gates, doors, secret passages, all that stuff.

Don't see the point of cheating in TES or Fallout though. That would insta-kill the fun for me, I'd never be able to stop myself once I'd started down that road. De-bugging is fine, don't get me wrong, but actual cheats aren't for me.

But then there's a game like Crysis, where I'll occasionally cheat my way into some weapons that aren't available until later into the game, just so I can mess around with them. Like, getting the sniper scope earlier than normal, can change the way you play some earlier maps.

Same would go for GTA or Saints Row, indeed.

So yeah, it's only really something I do after I've played the game legit, completed the hardest difficulty and all that.

A big part of the reason I play games is for the challenge, so I don't like to cheat. But with one caveat... for sandbox games like Saints Row 3, I like to cheat for a more robust sandbox experience. But usually I like completing the storyline first.

Yeah, I am basically in the same boat, I don't cheat either, it ruins the challenge, but in games like GTA where it is just fun to summon a tank and start blasting the crap out of stuff, you might as well...

It.

[NOTE: Do not put apostrophes in your options. I promise not to correct you on the grammar.]

But seriously...I'm fine with it until it effects other players beyond the scope of what the game should allow. If you can accomplish what you do with cheating with grinding, then cheating's fine. If it's a singleplayer game, cheating's fine (except where scoreboards are concerned, but then again who cares).

As for my own cheating, I used to look up cheats until about the age of 9. I don't now, because I like the challenge. I want to know that I've beaten the game as far as can be reasonably expected. Besides which, the games I play are inherently less open to cheating. It's not like the old days when there were button sequences and then you get infinite ammo or something. In fact, quite the opposite, games (especially Metal Gear Solid) make you work for your cheats. By the time I had the Bandana and Invisibility Camo on MGS4 I was done with the game. Just jaded of it. I couldn't bear getting through the opening scene where I didn't have all my gear, I was sick of it. So that worked well.

EDIT: Actually no, I lied. I summoned cars all the time in GTA4 whenever I needed to go somewhere. I lost cops and got weapons legitimately, but finding a decent car? Ain't nobody got time for that.

EDIT 2: Oh and a boat once.

I used to play with cheats all the time when I was a kid. But now? Eehh...

Honestly, I don't get mad at other people cheating in their singleplayer game. Because the reason why I don't cheat is because I feel like it's wrong. While I do feel a cringe at other people going godmode and giving themselves infinite cash, I don't get angry.

I only get angry and disappointed at myself if I decide to cheat. As if I gave in to temptation just to make the game easier, so I try not to. Unfortunately, this also applies to mods or side content that add items. I have a really hard time using DLC-added or mod-added weapons, especially if they're more powerful than the rest of the "vanilla" weapons.

They give me an advantage and I don't like advantages. I want to start from the bottom just like everyone else and work my way up.

I like think of games as a competition between me and the developers, where I must overcome all of the challenges they throw at me. And no matter how strong the competitor(s), I would never cheat in a competition. I participate in competition because I want to test my abilities. I could not accurately evaluate my skill level if I were to cheat.

It's simple, does it hurt others.

In single player games, go ahead. I do it especially in games like GTA, just because it is fun to be able to use a minigun with unlimited ammo.

If you cheat on multiplayer, your PC deserves to be wiped clean with a strong magnet after which your hands get ritualistically beaten to a pulp so you can never play a video game again.

Nope. Never. Then again I play a load of online games nowadays so "cheating" ain't really an option. It would be nice if Far Cry 3 had something that gave you full gear upgrades because the hunting got really old after the initial novelty though at least a New Game Plus.

I don't even use the Broken Tier characters in LoL, BlazBlue and P4A. Meanwhile everyone on XBL has picked up on that Mitsuru is Broken Tier and she's everywhere. Mitsuru, Akihiko, Yu and one guy devoted to his Yukiko. No other characters necessary at all ever.

I haven't used a cheat in years since my original NES and PS1 days. I used god mode a few times for older shooters like Doom when I first got into PC gaming in the early 90's. Now I like the challenge of playing a game on my own. If I get stuck somewhere and I cant defeat an enemy or solve a puzzle I will look online for a walk through or game guide for that instance but I dont read the whole thing. I like to be surprised. I have used mods in Skyrim to correct glitches and enhance the game but not to give me super powers or free gold or anything.

Does anyone consider using a guide or walk through to be a form of cheating?

I cheat very much like the OP. The only time I've completed Fallout 3 legit was on the Xbox 360. The only time I will not cheat is in multiplayer games and I despise anyone that uses cheats in multiplayer to give themselves an edge over other (like fucking GTA IV).

Cheating is fine, in a single player aspect.

The moment you cheat in any MP setting, even if its just with friends, or in a co-op game, then you might be harming other people's experience with the game.

So, single player = yes
Multiplayer = no, not even co-op. If it affects others players, even by shifting the bar as to what they're being expected to live up to, you shouldnt.

I generally dislike cheating but I understand some people have their fun that way and that's fine for them do it it. Although that's assuming we're talking about single player... Cheating in multiplayer is unforgivable.

There are some games where I'll cheat though, like in Oblivion. I spent the entire 100+ hours of Oblivion with god mode on because I didn't like the combat, I just wanted to explore.

If there are cheats in the games I'm playing then I will turn them on after my initial play-through. The reason I played Duke Nukem Forever all the way through as many times as I did is because it featured cheat codes! I wish more games had cheats like that but I guess they don't due to a combination of trophies/achievements and, encouraging people to modify games (not that they'll admit to the second)

I usually don't cheat, but I think you should if it makes the game more fun.

I wish there was a way to skip Deus Ex: HRs' boss battles, and a "slow-motion" cheat for Dustforce.

Oh, and I'd also love a way to hack Fallout 3/NV to replace VATs with slow-motion, with a time limit proportional to your Action Points.
While using slo-mo VATs, your reloading and sight alignment wouldn't be slowed down, and your melee attacks would be slow-moed according to a function of the weapons' weight.

As long as cheaters don't take their cheating online, I am completely fine with those individuals bending games to suit their desires. It doesn't harm my enjoyment of a game nor does it harm the enjoyment of anyone else.

Eh, I'm fine with people using cheats so long as it isn't in online multiplayer. If you do that, you shall be sent to Video Game Hell for all eternity.

You can't cheat in single player games you dolt!

There's nobody there to cheat. You're just changing the rules with consent of all those involved, that's not cheating. Cheating requires other people, it requires someone to cheat.

God... Don't you people read the Letters to the Editor [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/editorials/letters/8964-Gamers-as-Creators]? That should really be required reading. That issue at least, the second post to be specific. See, the Escapist Staff totally endorses my point of view, they even gave me a badge for it.

Wasn't this argument solved back in the days of MvSNK2?

Or... do you mean like code-cheats... which yeah, are only fine in playarounds and such.
