Started in the desert hundreds and hundreds of years ago to stop infections ie sand getting trapped then rubbing and causing said infection.

People were wrongly told it was for religious reasons so kept doing it. In a modern society the only benefit (ie hygene) is a non issue unless you are a dirty bastard and can't be bothered to spend an extra minute washing yourself. But if you are like that you probably won't be using your equpiment anytime toon anyway.

If people want to abide by some ancient old wives tale and mutilate their own children before they can choose for themselves then far be it for common sense to prevail. I feel sorry for children when I see them with their ears pierced when they are 2 years old by their 'parents' so you can probably guess my opinion on hacking off a piece of their penis for even less of a reason than fashion.

If you're an adult and want it dont they go for it, get an earring and tattoo while you're at it; it's your body.

Shouldn't be done until the person can decide. It is essentially genital mutilation.

Obviously if its medically necessary/recommended when the child is too young to choose then that's acceptable.

female circumcision shouldn't even be mentioned. it's not circumcision, it's outright mutilation. it doesn't just eliminate the ability of a woman to orgasm, it completely eliminates their ability to enjoy sex at all.

for those who would say that male circumcision is just as bad, i and thousands of other circumcised males can tell you we function perfectly fine, sexually.

I personally am all for it. It's easier for cleaning, helps protect against infection and for god's sake it's NORMAL. I've known way too many women who balk at an uncircumcised penis. I don't want my son to go through that. You do it as a baby, there's no memory of the event.

I totally agree with the OP's thoughts on the matter; what a rational adult does with their own body is their own buisness , but what some adults decide to do to their children is sick. Let them make their own decisions when they're old enough to think for themselves, sexual performance and STD resistance isn't going to affect them when they're five is it?

This is something I don't get, America and the UK will go to war with third world countries to protect their citizens against the horrors performed by the dictators (and totally not just for oil) yet they let their own citizens chop up children? Babies? Well, time for another dilemma, folks! How do you feel about circumcision? Is it good? Bad? Should it be legal? No? Yes?

Personally, i think i´ll weigh the pros and cons against eachother.

As I recall, this study was fairly dubious. Do you have the link at all? I couldn't find it, just that it seemed like bumpkis when I first heard it.

But the thing is, that PARENTS can make the descision in many countries, which i think is abhorrent and simply put, wrong, since the practice is irreversible. And if you say "Oh but it can be restored" no, it can´t, not entirely. It can be HEALED, but not restored.

I was not traumatized by my circumcision.
I do not miss my foreskin.

Given that I have no misgivings about it, I do not expect my own kids to have any misgivings about it.

I will probably advocate the circumcision of my own children.

Also, uncircumcised penises are weird looking.

So, my opinion is: If you´re an adult and want to, then fine, good for you. If you´re an adult and you´re about to circumcise a kid, screw you.

BONUS DISCUSSION: I find it quite amusing how many people there is that say: "Male circumcision is fine, but Female circumcision is EVUUUUUUUUUUUULLLLLLLL!" I want to ask them a question. Do you believe in equality towards both genders? If yes, shouldn´t male/Female circumcision be just as bad/good as the other?

How can you say that you are aware that female circumcision has "MUCH" more severe consequences, but that you think that male circumcision is just as bad?

Do you have any reason, at all, to think that? Or can I safely reject your claim that it is "just as bad" as subjective bullshitting?

For the record, if we were going to compare evil female castration to something similar in males, it would probably be bobbing the entire tip of the penis off in dudes. That would achieve a similar effect. And that would also be much more abhorrent than removing the foreskin, which is a non-issue.

I usually think unless there is a medical need e.g. recurring urinary infection or that thing where the skin hardens then it should be left until the person is old enough to make the decision themselves.

Female circumcision has varying degrees. It goes from removing part of the labia minor to hacking out a large portion of the vagina and sewing it shut. Some women have cosmetic surgery that removes part of the labia minor so from that you could sort of say some cosmetic surgery procedures were a form of female circumcision.

That really depends where you live. In the UK it's relatively rare to be circumcised compared to the US. As someone who lives in the UK, I just think circumcised penises look really weird, and to be quite honest, if I were faced with one, I wouldn't be entirely sure what to do ...

Heh, you defeated your own argument.

Evolution does not produce objectively good designs. It produces functional designs with what it is given. For instance, exterior testicles are shitty, shitty design, most animals, and most mammals for that matter, have interior testicles. But it's what evolution had to work with when it came to Humans.

Your God-did-it argument is a little more sound, but then again Yahweh hates foreskins so I guess it doesn't apply broadly there either.

The science is in, chopping off the major pleasure centers of the penis reduces the sensation experienced. Does the average victim notice? No, they've lived with the reduction all their lives. Hell, I was born without a sense of smell, I don't feel any 'effects' because I've never whiffed anything in my life. It's as hard to explain what a normal sexual encounter should feel like to a circumcision victim as it is to explain color to a blind man... or scent to me, in fact. I'd call the idea that women prefer scarred genitals and avoid the uncut ones far more mythic in quality.

Genital mutilation upon the unwilling is bad. That's what child circumcision is. Every culture has its awful little traditions, be they slavery, spousal abuse, xenophobia (common) or all the way up to the extremes of murder cultures. Just because something is an old tradition and a cherished one doesn't mean it isn't a bad idea.
