Picard is pretty damn awesome, but I think the award has to go to Sisko, aka The Beard.

Obey The Beard. Do not question The Beard. If you displease The Beard he will hurl you into the warp core. He also makes a damn fine jambalaya.

You.. do realize that is pretty much the entire point of the Star Trek series, right? Well, that and ships blowing each other up, but you get the point.

OT: Jean Luc Picard, naturally. That guy radiates charisma and intelligence with very little to no effort whatsoever. Sisko or Chris Pine's Kirk come in a close second.

My feelings were perfectly summed up on The Big Bang Theory: 'Original Series over Next Generation but Picard over Kirk'

...No, I've never seen DS9, Voyager or Enterprise

Actually, TNG and Voyager were more about moral dilemma's most of the time. And Voyager has some pretty good character development in it too.
Granted, yes. But they still had to explore and travel the stars to new worlds in order to meet these dilemna's, unless it was a ship personnel orientated episode (Star Trek: Insurrection compared to the episode "Ethics", for example, or the goddess con artist using holoprojection). Hence the name "Star Trek".

That's all I meant.

I'm tempted to say Sisko, because DS9 is my favorite Star Trek series, but thinking about it, I think it's a tie between Sisko and Janeway.

Captain John Luke Picard of the U.S.S enterprise.
He was my first real captain, and and he Patrick Stewart is a good actor besides.

I'd rank the Trek captains:

4. Sisko
(would have been an interesting character in the hands of an actor with the talent needed to play him -- unfortunately Avery Brooks wasn't it)
I'm sorry I can't hear you over how awesome this scene is.

"Could we please cut to T'Pol now? Doesn't she have to, like, shower or something?" Secondary response: "At least let's see if there's a re-run of Quantum Leap on..."
I like you.

I lol'd so hard at that one my head hurt, primarily because that usually WAS my reaction to that series.

OT:
I'd put my favor on Picard because he felt to be a more well rounded character.

I grew up with TNG not TOS or DS:9, so I might be biased towards him, but looking back at the character Picard felt more like a realistic captain, he was aloof, but he had a human side. And he felt more in keeping with Star Fleet's declared intentions, a negotiator and voice of reason, but an exceptionally dangerous commander when he had to be. The other captains fit their roles well, but Picard I think nailed 'Starfleet Captain' the best. Kirk was a Cowboy, Sisco was an administrator, Janeway was an inspirational leader, and Archer was...erm...kinda cowboy, but never defined as more than that...something of an attempt at Kirk retread.

ADDENDUM:
We do not speak the name of the New Kirk. The New Kirk is not the true Kirk, nor is he any other commander.

Chris Hemsworth plays Kirk's father in the Abrams Star Trek movie.
Chris Hemsworth plays Thor.
Therefore; Kirk is the son of Thor.

Commander Cliff Allister McLane...that's not fair though because he's from the best sci fi show ever that nobody outside of Germany will probably know, Space Patrol Orion.

Personally, I have a hard time deciding but I always watched more of the Next Generation series. I have a hard time directly comparing the captains, it's like two U-Boat movies, one with Diesel engines and the thrill of exploration, everything is patched together and works on sweat and cursing. The Next Generation is a nuclear sub, comfortable, clean and sophisticated, more of a peacekeeping job for the crew. Both Captains were perfect for their respective commands.
Kirk is the brash, adventurous type who'd lead all away teams, get into fights, lose his shirt and get all the alien babes, Picard is the always comprimising, smooth, intelligent and charismatic diplomat. Makes me a little angry how the movies tried to turn him into John McLane (Die Hard).
It's a tough choice. I guess Picard is my choice because Patrick Steward is just that amazing. There's no disrespect for the very entertaining and talented Shatner intended.

Picard. IMO, Janeway would have been the best if they'd chosen a different actor. Or done something better with her hair. The character itself was masterfully written.
