I saw this tagline in an ad for homefront and this lead me to think... Will CoD ever be dethroned? It's just like every iPod killing MP3 player, or WoW killing MMO. Making any statement against the "Running champ" seems hollow. Is it possible?

It will. Activision has killed many big-sellers in the past by milking them (well, many by IP standards), CoD will follow the trend eventually.

I think the game would be better off standing on it's own merits, rather than comparing it'self to something else.

I'm not so sure, people seem extremely willing to accept a pathetically small "innovation" as some kind of ground breaking advancement ala black ops.

The only example that comes to mind is in the skateboarding genre; EA's 'Skate' series effectively killed the 'Tony Hawk' games.

They will have to make a game that is undeniably better than COD to shut the fanboys up. But it's certainly possible.

I don't get it how people can be dumb enough to think that blops brought anything new to the table. Besides that, there's the ancient engine, problems loading map textures bigger than my backyard, unbalanced gunplay, and the fact that the game tries not to be a run n gun shooter like UT but still does it. Ballistic knives anyone?

Homefront seems meh, it seems to have better graphics, I like the setting (always wanted to see america attacked for a change)but for the most part, it doesn't have a foothold in the multiplayer community, and for a pure shooter, that's a certain death.

COD is already losing steam there is really only fanboys and prepubescent kids that play it, its not even that good of a game there are way more games out there with a far better multiplayer.

Yes COD dethroned Medal of Honour if you recall.

Cod will fall and fall hard. Already people are asking for innovation in the franchise and with Activision too scared to break the COD formula eventually a game will come to break the mould.

Though it is kind of a shame because it will actually be the COD fans who eventually break the game.

Don't delude yourself - it's easily the most played game on both console online networks.

That's cause there is alot of fanboys and prepubescent kids out there, but a true gamer knows there are games much better than CoD

I really do think CoD's "Reign of terror" is coming to a roadblock. They've reached a point where riding the Call of Duty 4 bandwagon won't amaze anyone; Modern Warfare 2 was pretty self aware regarding the way in which it addressed all the new fans of the series, for which it kept on making it easier for new players to get good scores so that they would be able to feel included within the community, but Black Ops has certainly dropped momentum, and it seems like the only way out of the problem that the CoD series have is pretty much delivering a massive, groundbraking product that blows everyone's mind, like Modern Warfare 1 did, but I really don't find that likely, not after all the good developers left Infinity Ward and the next game is being split amongst several small developers.

Who'll take the franchise throne? I really have got no idea.

Give it time, it might not happen in the next game, but I believe the next one won't be the best selling CoD, like Moderen Warfare2, or Black OPs.It will still be the most played but slowly, decline.

I voted yes, simply because after X amount of years, the stagnation of the "best of the genre" games eventually reaches critical mass and will bring itself down. That, coupled with the fact that other games can look at the current "best of the genre" game and say "ok, what can we do, to make a game exactly like that, but better?" eventually leads to the "best of the genre" game being dethroned; its how all games develop and grow.

As for CoD, Black Ops was a perfect example of stagnation. Very few new things, shitty multiplayer, legendarily shitty single player, and a sheep fan base = bad. MW3 will potentially give me new faith in the CoDs since I still play MW2 and enjoy it.

As for Homefront killing CoD: HA!
My brother bought Homefront and was going to bring it over for me to try it, but didn't because even HE said it was fucking terrible.

This thread kind of reminds me of when Aion was coming out and everyone was "ZOMG ITS GONNA KEEL WoW!" and it was a massive flop.
WoW is steadily on it's way to fuck itself. Cataclysm was a massive let down as far as I'm concerned.
Other genre kings just need to keep innovating and do what they do best, and they'll keep their throne.

Not until it just runs its course in its own due time. Miracles don't really happen so the chance of a game suddenly showing up that wipes out these titans like people think they will is next to nothing.

WoW is a good example, although its still ynow, god among the MMO world, it is starting to bleed subs since cataclysm hit, give it another year or two and there may be actual signs of it coming to an end, but it's gonna be because the game just lived its full life, no other MMO is going to suddenly kill it off.

As for call of duty...well that game remakes itself every year. God knows how long that's gonna take. And honestly I can't wait -.-.."realistic" Military shooters give me diabetes.

Edit: By coming to an end I mean loosening its grip on the MMO market enough for something else to slip in, the game itself probly has many more years of life in it, it's just its glory days that are finite.

Tip 1: If you're going to respond directly to a comment use the quote button - it's there for a reason.

Tip 2: Don't make stupid, asinine comments that insult other groups of people; thus making yourself and your opinion to appear nigh on worthless unless you can back up that statement with solid evidence.

Tip 3: Don't ever use the phrase "true" gamer; or "hardcore" gamer - or define different groups of gamers because once again it makes your opinion, and point, completely worthless. What exactly is a "true" gamer? Or do I get to make it up depending on the circumstance?

Tip 4: Don't insult a group of people that play a game when said game is your last played game on your console of choice...

I can think of quite a few (most all) multiplayer modes that are better than COD personally. Just because it's popular doesn't mean it's good.

Yes, CoD has dethroned itself for me. I can see Battlefield taking the title with BF3.
