Call of Duty will most likely fall when the predominant shooter style changes, which I can see happening fairly soon. Before Call of Duty it was TF2/C, Counterstrike and before that Quake and Unreal.

I predict a rise of the 'fun' shooters (Borderlands, DNF, Bulletstorm etc) in the coming year, and eagerly await it :)

Making any statement against the "Running champ" seems hollow.
Yes it is, it only increases the mind share of the one you're competing with and puts you in an inferior position. I have no idea why people do it.

Of course its possible. Quake 3, CS 1.6, BF 1942, CS:S, BF2, various Unreal games, TF2. All have been at the pinnacle at some point or another.

I can already tell black ops is dying. Mostly everyone on my friendslist doesn't really play anymore, this is coming from people who played the series from cod4 so i believe the franchise is losing its charm

I know its a longshot that is unbelievably unlikely but I predict (stupidly) that the king himself will dethrone blops. Yes Duke Nukem will save us all.

That's cause there is alot of fanboys and prepubescent kids out there, but a true gamer knows there are games much better than CoD

TF2 - w00t!!1@3!

In all seriousness, though, it'll be de-throned sooner or later. We've been through a gamut of titles that've reigned king, and many of those are still heavily played within the PC community . . . last I checked, quake2 and quake3 still had a devout following, not to mention those still playing unreal tournament, TF2, or hell, even CoD4.

It'll take a big blockbuster of a title to kick the CoD series in the nuts, and that won't happen as long as the gaming trends continue to resuscitate the current FPS style

COD is at the fore-front of FPS multiplayer gaming? please...

The only reason it's considered such is due to the fact that COD has been multi-platform for a number of years. This equates to a greater user-base.

That doesn't necessarily mean that the experience is bad, of course* - and the above point can be discounted.

In all honesty, I think that the changes brought in by COD 4 have dumbed down FPS multiplayer in general. However, I say this because I grew up with the DM games of old and I can appreciate that the likes of UT2004 and it's controls would not port over well to console.

OT: Definitely. C&C style RTS games (resource gathering and base building) were displaced by the likes of DoW 1, CoH, DoW 2 (all made by the same company! hurry up and make Homeworld 3, Relic!).

I think accessibility plays a large role in what is and isn't popular.

* Unless the game is developed by Treyarch (Black Ops Rage!)

Have you ever heard of the second law of thermodynamics?
Simplified, it states that everything in our universe comes to an end.

Seems relevant here.

Personally I think Call of Duty is killing the first person shooter as we know it. Most FPS's I play at the moment try to mimic it as they know it's popular. I know this is a trend in most products but I can't see many new or original shooters out there. I was disappointed when I bought Resistance 2 only to find that they had completely ditched the old control scheme and feel of the original game to try and mimic CoD so it would sell well. Crysis 2 is also something I was really looking forward to but upon playing the demo I thought to my self, "this is just Call of Duty: Future Warfare! The only real difference is suit powers".

Id software have always been my favourite developers of all time, always creating new technologies and the way we play our shooters. While watching an interview at E3 about Rage, they spoke about the control scheme being very similar to CoD for ease of access! This is one of the most definitive developers of this genre and they're copying!

Only games like the likes of Halo really stand apart in the same genre. Since Modern warfare the gameplay has been exactly the same with no real enhancements. For the last 4 years all we've been playing is the same game over and over in different environments. I just want to see something new, something not like Call of Duty that'll take the market by storm. But then again, the cycle will probably start again.

... But that's my opinion. I do enjoy playing it though with World at War being my favourite :)

Ha!

Wishful thinking springs eternal.

BF3 might end up being a better game. But it doesn't have a snowflake's chance in hell of beating CoD in terms of sales.

cod's gonna come to an end. personaly i've not been interested in black ops at all, or world at war. infinity wards games just felt better to play. treyachs just didn't have that feel of infinity ward's outings.
things just get superceded by something new. Halo used to be the biggest thing on XBox live, then along cane COD 4 and muscled into the top spot.
i never expected homefront to knock COD off the topspot. i mean it's a newcomer, whereas the other big boys have been around for a while. i hope it attracts a good fanbase though, cos i'm thinking of getting it :p

ALso BF 3; could it be the one?

Dethrone?
CoD never had the Throne.

CS:S and CS 1.6 Still have more active players per day then CoD...

this is like scuffling over who has second place because no one talks about talks about who's on first...

I saw this tagline in an ad for homefront and this lead me to think... Will CoD ever be dethroned? It's just like every iPod killing MP3 player, or WoW killing MMO. Making any statement against the "Running champ" seems hollow. Is it possible?
Not really.

It's not like boxing, in which boxer is pitted against boxer, and the contest is judged on the merits of the boxers themselves. If you are strong and fast enough to knock the other guy down, you can do so, and you'll be declared the winner. That's not how this works.

Imagine how boxing would go if, instead of actually fighting, the crowd voted for the winner. You paid some money to cast your vote, and whoever got the most votes won. Stupid? Of course, but follow me here.

If a long-running "champ" emerged, it wouldn't just be his skill that got him there. There's also the fact that all of his fans have invested money in him so far. In order to validate that, they'll keep voting for him. Because they're not just voting for him, they're also voting for themselves by extension.

Oh, and other people would start voting for this champ because he keeps winning, and no one wants to vote for the loser. Then those people fall into the same cycle. NOTE: That's not to say that this boxer has no merit, or that the people voting don't genuinely enjoy what that boxer does. It's just that the challenger doesn't stand a chance, because his own merit has nothing to do with the proceedings at this point.

2 words: Guitar Hero.

If you pump out enough games for a particular title, in a small amount of time, people will become bored with them. Its only a matter of time until COD suffers the same fate as GH.

I doubt any other company will succeed in dethroning COD, but Activision will in all likeliness dethrone their own game themselves...
