So I saw that steam has COD4 MW for %50 of retail price.

It sounds like a good deal...
But I thought I should get the honoured opinions of the escapist magazine's forumites.

With MW2 out is it really worth getting MW, even for half price? Are the dedicated servers still running? Is the game even good? Does the player base have decent people or is it just full of 12 - 14 year olds who spam everything?

Yes to all questions.

It's a good game, still played by the hard core who refused to abandon ship in favour of MW2, still dedicated servers, still 12-14 years spamming.

MW1, Yes.
MW2, No.

The one thing I can respect MW1 for was balance, at least in MW1 you didn't have people talking about the best guns or best perk combination's. Now its just people trying to get high K/D ratios and killstreaks instead of having fun.

It's hard to tell. For me, I put Modern Warfare 1/2 second to TF2 as my favorite multiplayer PC games. It's fast-paced, fun action that's good for relaxing on a Friday night. Some people think the original is better than MW2, so I wouldn't think it too bad an investment.

MW1 for the campaign. Loosely based in reality, cohesive, immersive, pants on head awesome. The multi is fun too, although is does feel a touch dated here and there, and martyrdom and trip frags are in play, so its your call. but its now my call. and i say buy it

EDIT: Sorry, read MW2 and made a comment about it.

I would say buy it for the single player, but only if it is cheap (5$)

#1 was quite a bit better than two from what I have played of them (and trustme, I have played a lot).

The story was a bit more coherent, the spec ops missions weren't as good as arcade mode (spec ops: cut down versions of story missions, arcade: timed, scored campaign mode), and most of all, I at least remember the multiplayer being more balanced in general. Sure, the perks were actually a bit worse, and grenade spam is a constant issue, but the killstreaks are at least reasonable. i.e.: you aren't going to get an AC 130, an apache, a predator missile, UAV jammer, and then a nuke called in in the course of a minute.

I only tried the multiplayer, since it was free on valve for a weekend about 1-2 weeks ago. And I must say I am very disappointed with the support the game is getting, and with the community.

Every second server I got in had someone with some sort of a hack going on, games would constantly be shut down due to host leaving and it not being able to transfer to a new host, and every once in a while we would have the maximum amount of players and the game wouldn't start (would just say "waiting...")

I am most disappointed with the community. Every single server had people dropping various racial slurs, and comments regarding the sexual orientation of whomever killed them. The maturity level just did not exist and definitely made it a less enjoyable experience. Then I went back to good old TF2 and the maturity returned :)

I would say the game had lots of promise and was quite entertaining, but having no direct control over what map you would play on (and very limited amount of maps) also took away from the multiplayer experience. An extra note: Who ever hosted an online match had the advantage of zero-lag and therefore had the edge in sudden run-ins. (which is awesome when you are the host... but there were times where I would turn a corner, put 3-4 shotgun blasts point blank into someone and I die, I watch the replay and I didn't even get the first shot off)

Final opinion: I would not buy it. It was fun to play for a weekend, but by Sunday I already uninstalled it even though I had the day left. I'm sure the single player is much better and would be fun, but since the game (and many games like it nowadays, sadly) is made for the online gaming and will just dissolve when the next one comes out; it would not be worth it.
OP is asking about MW1, your talking about MW2.

I say but it. Its a good deal and I actually enjoyed the MP for MW1 very much.

I noticed the second I hit post... read a few other peoples comments (there were none when I started my post), I did edit it seconds later. Guess you were unlucky to see it :p

I haven't ever played either MW game on multiplayer, but the first one is easily worth $15 for the singleplayer campaign alone.

honestly yes, i really dont think martydom is that big of a deal in mw1, unless your a knife fanatic then it counters you, otherwise you have like 2-3 seconds to dodge the easily dodge-able grenade (this is to all you people who whine about it like its the end of the world) the game is way more balanced then the 2nd one and personally i love the maps so much better, so yes, worth it

Is it worth getting? Yes. If you're into it. I'm not.

Is it worth making a thread about a game's price? No.

Should it count as advertising to make a thread about said price? Yes.
