I had to vote for Aquaman because he basically has all the superpowers of Spongebob.

He can breath underwater, talk to fish, and needs to stay moist to survive. He also has various different ways of getting people wet.

He's probably the lamest serious superhero ever, but honestly I find him really enjoyable because of that. I love all the ways they have to stretch the plot in order to make him actually useful. Robbers just stole the royal jewels? Not a problem, because their getaway vehicle is a submarine in the sewers! (Plus, he's honestly more heroic than Batman, because at least Batman has his Batsuit and super training. Aquaman just has his lame ol' powers but he still fights crime!)

I really wish they'd do a crossover where Aquaman actually met Namor, because while Aquaman #56 and Submariner #72 were cool because they were connected, I still would like to see the two kings of the sea duke it out!

For those of you who are too lazy to use google, in Aquaman #56 Aquaman destroys a satellite that was covering Detroit in algae (no really) but accidentally brings some of the super algae onto the satellite when he destroys it. While the wreckage is plummeting towards earth, somehow the algae becomes a sentient supermonster that Namor has to destroy in Submariner #72. The authors crossover wasn't actually officially sanctioned, but the authors got away with it because DC's publishers didn't actually read the comics.

There's your little bit of comic history for the day!

Zero Hour is awesome and a must for any fan of DC IMO.

Batman always drags me in to comics when I have a dry spell but that may be my tastes. I can pick up a batman comic and accidentally get drawn back in despite being a marvel fan.

Spectre is another one you may look into.

It gets really good when Hal Jordan gets involved.

For Marvel, you should check out the Gambit miniseries from 1997. I love that book series.

Then of course I highly recommend the Age of Apocalypse

Most of the Spawn comics from the mid- to late '90's are really good as well, and can be found at relatively good prices in paperback/collected form. The regular series was good, but the side-series like Curse of the Spawn, Spawn the Undead and Hellspawn were really good. Unfortunately Curse have gotten somewhat rare.

Too bad though that all these series had such short runs and that the regular series took such a nosedive in quality(and never really recovered). They tried to make the book 'dark and gritty' again but its just....meh. Todd McFarlane's company makes some fantastically detailed figures/toys though.

I didn't mention any Captain Marvel. I am not sure what you mean. I mentioned Marvel, as in the company. However, suggested you may like the Spectre (DC) due to him being a dark DC hero and I think he is right up your alley. Then suggested Zero Hour (DC), a 6 book storyline that has many branching paths you could follow up on should you so choose.
Then I suggested some Marvel titles I feel are really good like the 4 book Gambit miniseries and Age of Apocalypse a fairly large event in the X-men universe. I know you prefer DC but considering you like Ghost Rider and Spiderman, I figured Marvel wasn't off limits. Thus I offered a DC story that was also a big event I loved, a Marvel story I love, a DC character you may like, and a Marvel big event I loved, to hit every criteria you were asking for.
