Before you read this post, I am not currently aware if something like this already exists or not. So if you already have one PM me and I will try to bring a group of people off the escapist IRC onto it to populate/support you :D.

Previously we have been using Skype but it's been getting more and more isolated from the general community and we only have 4-10 people we are likely to see on any given day anymore, and some of those only pop up for a few minutes if at all.

So an idea that I have been bouncing around for a while is to set up quite a large public teamspeak or mumble server (probably teamspeak because a lot of people aren't familiar/comfortable with mumble and I dislike ventrilo intensely.

I'm just trying to gauge how much interest there would be in such a thing.

Edit: I managed to make two of the poll options more or less the same..oh well.

I'm happy for everybody to be welcome, I mean if somebody starts hosting their TOR guild meetings in my teamspeak with like 30 people in a 40 slot server I may be annoyed but otherwise I'm more than happy to set it up with private channels and whatever as long as those people are active.

An interesting idea, I would probably use it a few times but I don't know if I would be a regular using it. I haven't really used any voice chat options on anything yet, I have yet to even do it on skype but if the escapist picked up something like that I'd have to give it a try.

I would use it if I didn't have a sound card that didn't have a shit-fit everytime I tried to use something other than my crappy laptop microphone.

It would be interesting, but I remember a few years ago on Xbox live when I used to use voice every other thing would be `Who's the girl? Are you British??? I can't understand you`.

"Omg r u srs, you're a girl?! I'm British too, r u sngle??????????111?!! ^_^ :3 \o/ <3 <3 <3 <3."

Moving away from creepy jokes..

I get a fairly large response because of my voice being quite distinctive aswell.

It's not uncommon for people to join voice chats just to listen and then type their responses, although it's more common for dedicated guild or specific game things.

It's quite habit forming once you get used to it.

If it'd exist I'd probably give it a go, but no promises about logging on more than once or twice.

I'd probably use it off and on, depending on my mood that day. Would be neat to have around either way though

I'd at least use it the once. Usually skyping with my regular gaming comrades but I'm sure I could find time to use this.

If it were to set up why wouldn't you just get them to move to the server?

It's a good idea - and I'd certainly drop in if the mood took me - but you might encounter a few problems with the balance between having a server large enough to be open to people, but not so large that the whole thing becomes one giant vocal clusterfuck.

Admittedly, I know next to nowt about Teamspeak so I could just be talking out of my arse here.

At least if you're a girl you don't get called Harry Potter every 5 seconds like what happens to us boys >.<

I already am an active part of a few Escapist chat rooms (they're niche chat rooms, not just general Escapist). I'd be interested in seeing a few regulars in a chat room, sure, but I probably wouldn't use it.

Teamspeak is split into various 'rooms' so the whole server's capacity is x and then there are any number of different rooms to be in which can all have different passwords or none at all. So for example if you and your friend were playing a game and shouting really loud voice commands you'd go off into your own room to do so.

Generally it's very rare for the majority of the server to be in one room.

I could set a general lobby for talking nonsense with a dozen other people, and then have a VIP room with a password only 4-5 people know.

Yet to be decided, here is good enough for now.
