It's an abuse of basic human rights.

Plain and simple.

I can't belive some 'civilised' countries still enforce it.
In what way is it an abuse of human rights. Its a term of service to your country that everyone should be proud to do.
Please explain how this is an abuse of "Human Rights".
It is an abuse of human rights in that it is something which is forced upon people when it is something that a vast percentage of them do not want.

I know people who have lost thier family business and livelihoods due to conscription laws.
The fact it is forced upon them even though you don't want it doesnt make it against human rights. There are a number of different laws that amny people don't want that are forced upon them e.g the fact that cannabis is illegal in the UK. many people would rather hat wasn't the case but it is. Thats hardly seen as going against human rights though.

It is an abuse when it forces people into a life that for some is tantamount to torture.

I can wholly understand the attraction for some poeple, and I greatly respect anyone who chooses to join the army of thier own free will, as it often is a brave choice to make.

For me it would be a fucking nightmare and I would hate every second of it.

I don't know where you got the idea that life in the forces would be torture? Necause its a disciplined life in which you have to follow orders? Because you are forced to be physically fit?
And not everyone who is conscripted would be placed on the front lines. More would most likely be placed in support roles as conscripted front line troops make poor front line troops.
The only time i can think of when armed forces training would be torture would be the selection process for the SAS where you are tortured

A (very) disciplined life where you have to (consatntly) follow orders- yeah, honestly that sounds pretty awful to me.

I would go mad having a life that was completely regimented and having some dude shouting in my face every day.

But my buddy loves it, and he thrives on it. He just got promoted to corporal and is happy out because now he usually gets to be shouter as opposed to the shoutee :D

That's my point, eveyone is different, no one should be forced either way.
