Poll: Console Selling Game. Will one exist?

My friend and I were having a conversation about differences of PS3 and Xbox games/capabilities/online, when he brought up an old, dusty topic:

"Do you think there will ever be a game, so impressive, that it will cause gamers to go out and buy a separate (PS3 or Xbox) system, just to play that ONE game?"

I laughed myself tears. There's just no way.

Then I remembered The Escapist forums.

"Yea, maybe."

The reason I bring this up, is because, in my mind, a Blu-Ray Final Fantasy 7 would cause RPG fans to spend green paper faster then Enron lost it. But, it's just my opinion.

Do you think there's a possibility of such a legendary game? Is there one currently that answers my friends question?

Someone I know recently bought a PS3 for Heavy Rain as well as Final fantasy. Then I told her ff wasn't an exclusive. It didn't bother her.

I was gonna say this also, I remember Halo being the main thing that kept the first xbox from being a total failure.

Now that I think about it, everyone I know who got an original Play Station back in the day mostly got it for Final Fantasy VII.

I bought the 360 for Gears of War and Dead Rising
I bought my PS3 (because my PS2 died) for Ratchet and Clank and later on, God of War 3.
I didn't buy my Sega Genesis, my grandma did when I was a kid, and I wanted it for Sonic! :O

I believe the intended question is asking whether or not you believe there will ever be a game good enough that it forces you to buy the console just for that ONE game.

it already happened, when MGS4 came out, they bundeled it with the ps3, and they sold a hell of a lot of em.

I got my Xbox 360 mainly for the Halo series and because that's what all my friends had but I had to resist the urge to get a PS3 for Metal Gear Solid 4 many times. Up till this generation of consoles I'd mainly used Nintendo stuff up through the Gamecube so it wasn't an easy call for me to go with the 360, PS3, or stick with Nintendo and the Wii (glad I didn't stay with the Wii. It's got its gems but not nearly enough for playing single-player only stuff.)
