I bought a Dreamcast after watching Soul Calibur for 20 minutes.

I bought an Xbox after playing Halo co-op with a friend (ended up being one of only 3 games on the system worth owning).

So the answer is 'yes' for me.

I know there aren't many racing fans among you, but Gran Turismo did the trick for me .
I bought my first PS1 (my first console too) for the original Formula One back in '96. I then bought a PS2 when it came out for the F1 series, Gran Turismo and MGS2 which were all PS2 exclusives.

When the PS2 died last year I replaced it with a PS3, partly because I guess whether or not I care to admit it I have become a Sony 'fanboy', but also because of GT5 & MGS4.

So yeah, not only WILL there be console-selling games, they have in fact been around for pretty much as long as there have been consoles!

Remember Halo? That really good game that everyone thinks they're cool for hating now? Yeah, it pretty much single-handedly kept the Xbox alive long enough to get other good games on it. If not for Halo, Xbox most likely would not have survived. I'd call that a console-selling title.

I bought a 360 for Resident Evil 5 and Tales of Vesperia. One of them ended up exclusive... kinda, since the PS3 version's only for Japan.

I think people don't quite get the real question. The scenario is the following: You already own one new console. Could there ever be a game on the other console that you would buy it for without even thinking about the other exclusives released on that particular console?

Well, I doubt it... if we're talking about full price here. 3-4 years later, used, maybe - but I can only talk for myself and buying a complete console and afterwards owning only one single game sounds outrageous.

Yes. There always was a console selling game, and there always will be. More so in this generation than in the previous ones.

Look at the PS3 right now. What games practically sold the console? Tekken 6, FFXIII (In spite of both of them being multiplatform, they still count.), MGS4, Resistance 1 and 2, God of War III, Uncharted, inFamous, Heavy Rain, and Motorstorm.

Keep in mind that these are just examples. But the point I'm trying to demonstrate is that YES, there is such a thing called a console selling game, but they vary differently from person to person and according to tastes. One person will buy a 360 to play saaay... Halo, whereas another person will buy it to play RPG's like Fallout 3 or Oblivion.

So yes. There is a console selling game. It just depends on what you as a person demand and ask for in a game.

There's never been a game that has solely driven me to a console, but it has been a collection of games that, in total, made the console purchase worth my while. The PSP took Maverick Hunter X, Silent Hill Origins, and the Final Fantasy Tactics remake for me to say, "Yeah, I'll pick it up."

Although I inadvertently picked up the Gamecube for Super Smash Bros Melee. I bought it and the game on Black Friday for my brothers when it was knocked out of my hands and landed hard on the ground. I rushed back to my dorm to make sure it still worked, and as I was setting it up to test it, my dad calls me to talk about gifts (so there would be no overlap), and tells me that he'd be getting my two brothers a Gamecube. >_>

I got my PS3 for the promise of God of War III. And that was 2 years before the game was even released! I don't care for MGS4, LBP and Killzone 2, and only discovered the Uncharted and R&C series after purchasing the console, so GoW3 was the sole exclusive titles I cared about at the time.

I've had some sweet times with many other games, but the promise of God of War III is what lured me to the PS3 in the first place. I probably wouldn't have bought a console (at least not at that time) if I'd only cared to ever play one game 2 years away on it, but this single game firmly decided what console I got.

Halo and cod keep me on the xbox, though uncharted two looks pretty good.
Pretty good, thats an understatement my friend. Freaking EPIC more like it!

OT: I bought the Xbox 360 for Gears of War and Dead Rising, even though Dead Rising dissapointed me, however Gears is still in my top 5 shooters along with Borderlands, CoD 4, CS and TimeSplitters FP (which I think was totally underated in my opinion.)
I sold the 360 when it RROD on me. I ended getting the PS3 not cuz I wanted any paticular game at the time but just didnt want the Xbox cuz I knew it would RROD me again which is exaclty what it did when I sold it to a friend 3 MORE TIMES!

I've only ever bought a console when I knew their were at least a few games available I'd play on it buts theirs always a single title that motivates me more than others. With 360 it was Gears of War, with ps3 it was Ratchet and Clank ToD.

Heavy Rain alone sold me on a PS3...When I get myself a job to make me some money.

GoW3 is the same great stuff as GoW2, but its the same stuff.

MGS...AHAHAHAHAHAHA! I could care less about Snake and them.

I bought my XBox solely on the basis of having played ten minutes of Halo (I was young, I didn't know...)

Then I bought my 360 pretty much solely for Halo 3 (I'm coming to the disturbing realisation that I might technically be a fanboy.)

So yeah, although I since bought other games for both consoles, it was only one which made me buy the console first.

So far, nothing has come out which would convince me to buy a PS3 though. And I haven't seen anything which would motivate me enough to get me back into PC gaming (which would require the buying of new equipment etc.)

And any Wii games I play at parties actually motivate me to not buy the console more and more.

I got a PS3 for MGS4 and was not disappointed, also the fact that I didn't pay for most of it makes it that much easier.

Since I got it though my game collection has expanded only slightly, I have around 10 games now for it.

Gran Turismo 5 and Tekken 6 (when it was originally planned to be an exclusive) are what drove me to buy a PS3.
