Well the only option a guy really has is to wear a condom or not. Assuming that it's a serious relationship and I believe that the girl is on the pill/has the implant, then I'd much prefer not to wear one.

Also now that particle physicists have found the Higgs Boson, maybe we'll see a similar exodus of scientists to biochemistry similar to what happened in the 60's, and we'll finally get a few decent options for men.

Yeah, pretty much this.
I'd much rather my partner was on something that kept her from catching a case of the babies, but that's not an option if you're only really interested in casual sex.

Not that I have an active sex life :/

Apparently there has been significant developments in one particular kind.

My girlfriend is on the pill but we use condoms anyway, and the one time we haven't she went and got a morning after pill. We're maybe a little paranoid... That said, the one time we didn't use a condom it didn't feel THAT much better (for me), so I don't get terribly upset at having to use them, it just upsets the flow of things a bit.

I've been on the pill for six years straight and I've been in long term relationships (two different guys) for five of those years. Up until a couple of weeks ago it was my little miracle.

Then I got a blood clot in my leg that led to a pulmonary embolism. I'm 22 years old and relatively active, no long haul flights involved.

One of the side effects of the pill, unfortunately. I've had to come off of them now and while I'm not in a relationship I have an appetite and I'm not looking forward to having to rely on condoms.

Once I'm off the blood thinning medicine (have to take it for six months to ensure the clots clear out) I'm going to get an IUD, can't really get it while I'm on the medicine though because both things make you bleed heavier on your period and there's a risk of becoming anaemic.

IUD Worked pretty well for us (*checks* nope, no kids, just dogs). My wife had an estrogen sensitive version of breast cancer, so the pill was right out, and all the mechanical stuff is a pain. Effectiveness is surprisingly high, especially since you can't forget to take it. If I were in the dating scene, though, I'd go with condoms (with a spermicide). STDs don't care if she's on the pill.

The pill, I tried the shot once, I went completely suicidal. I have given thought to the IUD since I already had a child it should be easier to have one inserted. I also use condoms in the start of the relationship and even though I know the Italian method of putting one on, I rather go without them.

A possible male alternative to the pill is being developed!

The withdrawal method just sounds so frustrating, though. Isn?t sex meant to be relaxing experience, rather than you panicking at the end because you have to pull out real fast and spunk on her stomach, ruining the moment?
Not to mention that fact that it, you know, isn't in any way reliable.
Indeed. My own existence is a pretty poor advert for the withdrawal method, my mother informed me during a tmi talk...

Girls actually get them that young? That's terrifying! Especially because I'm a smoker.

Yup. I knew it was a risk, but at this age and never having smoked in my life I was all "Pffft, I'm sure I don't have to worry about that."

I got unlucky, I guess. Could have been worse, though, it was a minor PE and, yehknow, it didn't kill me. So that's good.

Any potential contraceptive from that method would be at least ten years away, as it sounds like they haven't actually designed and tested a drug yet. I think there are a few methods to reduce fertility on a temporary basis such as wearing a special sack, and having a hot bath, but all options are far more long-lasting than something like the pill.

I'm fairly sure that something will come along this century, as it would be very profitable for any company that discovered it. I suppose female biology provides quite an easy target compared to men.

Yeah but it's one of the side-effects in that LONG list that seems like it'll never happen, like temporary blindness or something.

The upcoming alternative method I'm most interested in is the "tear sperm cells to shreds with electric fields method"

Contraception?

I have 5 kids .... WHERE IS YOUR CONTRACEPTION NOW.
I'd think by the third kid they'd start acting as a contraceptive themselves.

Anywho, I'm gay. There's no contraception needed, it's just a matter of protecting yourself from STDs. Not many options in that category.

Oral contraception is a synthetic form of pregnancy hormone(s). It tricks lady parts into thinking there's a bun in the uterus/ova released. Naturally, the body shuts down reproductive functions when it thinks there's already a fetus/egg up in there.

The thing about the pill is that some women are crazy and will lie about it or will stop taking it in order to get pregnant. And I'm terrified of that happening.

So I use condoms. Work fine for me. I have used withdrawal before, but only because I was young and reckless.

But, hopefully soon, there will be a new type of birth control that requires an injection into men, a one-time injection that will last for years and years and is reversible and is, barring a case of mis-application, completely effective thus far.

RISUG is its name, and will definitely put birth control out of business. It's freaking awesome.

This way, there is no way for one member to lie to the other member in order to cause pregnancy. No chance of poked condoms or purposefully skipping birth control. Nothing. And I'm fucking excited.

Edit: I seriously got ninja'd? Well that's good, means that knowledge of this awesome, awesome procedure is spreading quickly.

Holy fuck, it's now in clinical trials in rabbits in the US. Fuck yes.
