Poll: Controller of Choice

Depends entirely on the genre of game.

FPS... mouse and keyboard. Gamepads with analogue sticks have no precision without some kind of autoaim, and I would never trust autoaim.
RPG... depends. If it's a real RPG like Final Fantasy, a gamepad is the way to go. (A retro controller with a d-pad and no analogue sticks, naturally.) But, if it's some kind of click-and-slash like Diablo or Baldur's Gate, there's not much choice other than to use a mouse.
Fighters and 2D Platformers, along with pretty much all kinds of arcade games and shoot-'em-ups, demand a joystick. End of story.
3D Platformers are where modern gamepads with dual analogue sticks find their usefulness. Basically, whenever it's more important to swing the camera around the player character than it is to aim his guns, you want that right-hand analogue stick. The question, of course, is: which style of gamepad is the best?

The old XBOX pad is too unwieldy, and with certain buttons not easily reached. (I'm looking at you, Black and White buttons!)
The Gamecube pad fits the hands very nicely, and the big A button makes it ideal for simple games... but the X and Y buttons, C stick, and D pad are all hard to reach, and the L and R buttons have too much give to easily depress fully, so it's not a great pad for anything more complex than MarioKart or Smash Bros.
The good old PSX dualshock is certainly the paragon of the spartan design, lacking all superfluous affectation, and it must do the job well if it's spawned so many knockoffs (Logitech, anybody?) and hasn't changed since 1998.
But the award for sheer ergonomic perfection has to go to the 360 controller. Much better size, heft, and hand-fit than its predecessor, to say nothing of button placement (the A/B/X/Y on the face hearkens pleasantly back to the efficiency of the SNES controller), and both shoulder buttons and analogue triggers that depress easily. And, as if it weren't already great, it uses a PC-compatible USB port. Kind like the old days, when you could plug your Sega Genesis pad into the same universal 9-pin joystick port used by Atari, Commodore, Amiga, etc.

I haven't ever hated a controller (although I never got my hands on the n-gage or the boomerang for the ps3). I liked the N64, PS2, 360 the best.

I actually love the Gamecube controller. It is my favourite "modern" controller.

Outside of console land, mouse and keyboard reign supreme.

I'm gonna go with PS controller (Not necessarily PS3, because they're all the same, basically.)

It feels the most natural. Though that may be because I grew up with Sony consoles.

I find the Xbox 360 controller to be the most comfortable and versatile. In fact, I even use the USB port on my computer to play PC games with the 360 controller. However, other styles of controllers don't bother me much. I'm just best with the 360's.

360, it's basically the reason I own a 360 and not a PS3. The PS3 controller is just too small and pointy for my large hands. It's not comfortable.

Most of the older ones are nice, as long as they're not pointy like the NES.

I've only used consoles, and I've enjoyed the 360 controller much more. I'm sure if I grew accustomed to the keyboard it would be much better for tight controls though.

My PS3 controller with RealTriggers is great for me, and is probably my favorite.

I like all the controllers equally except the 360 controller... its way to heavy and fat feeling

Mouse and keyboard are definably the best, however out of the consoles I like the 360 controller better.

There should have been an option for the PS2 controller. I liked that. If Sony had just made it wireless for the PS3 w/o changing the R2/L2 buttons squishy my vote wouldn't have been 360.

I'm a predominantly console gamer and don't own a Wii (yet) so that narrows it down to a choice between the PS3 and 360 controllers. Between those 2 I prefer the 360 controller for a few reasons:

1: Familiarity, I have owned a 360 longer than a PS3 and am more comfortable with the controller
2: Triggers, I really like the concave 360 triggers and feel they are much easier to use than the convex PS3 Triggers.
3: Size, I can use a 360 controller for hours but after using a PS3 controller for the same amount of time my hand gets tired due to the lack of space between the handles and buttons.

Nothing compares to the accuracy and control of a mouse and keyboard. It's my preference whenever possible.

Console Favorite: GameCube. Best placement of buttons and analog sticks. I really liked the 8 'corner' points on the analog sticks.

Familiarity & Convenience: Small, lightweight, USB/Bluetooth, motion sensing all in one controller. Plus it has been around for 3 generations (old xbox didn't even last 1)

Size: I use an old Logitech Wingman Cordless Rumblepad alot. It's big, but I have big hands. It was revolutionary for its time. The "throttle control" can be useful on some games.

Potential: poor shoulder buttons/triggers, imprecise d-pad, and the awkward battery pack ruin the 360 controller for me.

PS3, the 360 controller is just bloody massive designed for someone with much larger hands than I have and I'm so used to console controllers whenever I try to play say an fps with a mouse and keyboard I overaim so wildly I miss virtually every time. And I don't have a wii.

Probably has something to do with the fact I've been playing playstations since the PS1 days and the controllers have hardly changed.

You put the Wii-mote? Yuk!

Mouse and Keyboard easily with the Gamecube controller close behind. I choose for total control, more options and comfort.
